Here is an updated continuation of "Audition and Class Size Number" Please post on here rather than past thread.

Don’t you think we could just continue updating the past thread to stay current with each year? I don’t really feel it’s necessary to start all over again, that past thread has a very strong list that could be easily updated.

I’m with you, Son of T. - I say let’s update that other already existing thread. No need for a new one. But looks like the list over there does need to be unburied and have current info added.

For historical purposes, the thread that got us here:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/503504-audition-class-size-numbers.html

The last time the actual “list” from the other thread was updated was 7/21/08 - everything after that was discussion but no additional list updating.

It would be lovely to update something, either here or there! I’m thinking some of those that were a few hundred in '08 broke the 1000 mark this year.

every guidance department in the country should have this thread! Maybe kids would develop more realistic college lists… and understand the need to have many non-auditioned opportunities that are not just fallbacks but are desirable options.

UMiami auditioned 500 and accepted 16 for MT

For Point Park, is that 1300 for everyone who auditioned to the entire theatre department or a specific major?

Roosevelt/CCPA auditioned a little over 350 and looked for a class of 25 MT students.

I don’t have absolute number, but I know that Univ. of Michigan’s stat’s were much higher this year. Largest audition class to date…so the 450 is a an old number. Number accepted has not changed…they look for a class of 20.

Please remember that the number accepted, at most colleges, is not the same number as slots in the class. Most programs accept a higher number than slots in the class as not everyone will take the offer to attend. When looking at acceptance rates, one should go by number who applied and number accepted, not number yielded (slots in class).

I would imagine that most of these schools have to accept two or three times the class size to yield the desired numbers (that’s a 40 - 60% yield, aka the percentage of students who say yes to the school’s offer). (My math could be wrong.)

SDonCC, actually I think it differs greatly from BFA to BFA program in that regard. Some highly competitive programs accept some extras, but only a handful, surely not two or three times the desired class size, as they have a high yield rate and then if they don’t fill the class, they go to the wait list. But there are some programs that likely accept close to twice the size of the class. I also think that some programs are finding themselves with higher yield rates than in the past as more and more kids seem to be applying. While there are some kids holding onto numerous BFA acceptances, there are many who only got one or two.

Even in regular college admissions, some schools have higher yield rates than others. For example, Harvard has a pretty high yield rate (many who are accepted take the offer!) as compared to a school like Alfred University or Hofstra.

But, how do the schools know WHICH one or two acceptances among the multiple applications the kids will have gotten. Not sure why more applications makes yield go up; I’d think it might make it go down.

At Tisch, Mary Dean Campbell said its yield is comparable to the Ivies, which would put it at 60-70%ish, so this means they need to accept 30-40% more to account for this (if I’m calculating this correctly). And even this yield is for TIsch as a whole; it was not broken down by department.

Anyway, I agree with your original point: most schools accept more than the class size; and if anyone can fill in the charts above with that data, that would give people a more realistic framework.

I’m speaking of MT here, not regular admissions. I agree in regular admissions with more applicants, yield might go down. But in BFA in MT programs, it seems more and more kids are trying for these programs and there are not a lot of slots available nationwide in BFA in MT programs. Lots and lots of kids vying for very few slots. And I think more than ever, that the majority of those accepted to these BFA in MT programs, are not holding onto numerous acceptances as the odds are getting very difficult to get in and so just given the odds, sometimes only the most talented kids have lots of BFA acceptances and there are a lot of BFA applicants holding just one or two acceptances who are then apt to take the offer as they are not sitting on a lot of acceptances, as just getting into ANY BFA in MT program these days is no easy feat. I also believe that at the top programs, there is a higher yield rate.

I would have to hear the exact yield rate at the BFA in MT at Tisch. For example, I know in my D’s year (2005), for CAP21, they wanted to yield 64, and I recall that they put out 80 offers and had a big problem that year as most of the 80 took them up on the offer and so they yielded too many and had the biggest MT class ever. I am sure the following year, they were more cautious in the number of offers they put out and if they didn’t fill the class, they have a wait list.

I also recall in our visit to UMich, that the year before my D’s year, that had too many students accept the offer…something like 28, if I recall, and so they were going to put out less offers, more like 24 (about four extras built in to yield about 20).

There are actually a couple of small programs that accept NO extras: Carnegie Mellon and Otterbein come to mind. CMU has a high yield rate. They go to their wait list if someone doesn’t take the offer. Otterbein is a very small MT program (just four girls and four boy slots per year) and so cannot risk overenrolling. They accept exactly 8 and go to a wait list if need be.

Most programs do accept extras for their MT program, but go by their past yield rates to come up with a number that they will put out offers to each year. At some programs, there are a handful of extras in the original offers and at other programs who have a history of a lower yield rate, they may go as high as double the class size. But I think most do not accept double the size for a MT program. But they certainly accept more than the number of slots in the class.

This is the important thing. I read VERY often on this forum where people will say that X number auditioned/applied for Y number of slots and consider that the acceptance rate, when the reality of it is that more were accepted than the number of slots in the class and that is the number to go by when understanding the odds and the acceptance rates. It is certainly useful to also know the class size in terms of selecting a program.

PS, in the last couple years of your posting on CC, I thought you were a Dad and just learned you are a mom based on another post of yours today! :)

We met with admissions at U Mich this past Monday. Over 700 auditioned this year for MT.
