Audition Event on Saturday

Hi!
D and I will be at Coastal on Saturday for the audition event. We are looking forward to seeing the campus, meeting current MT students, meeting falculty and learning more about what looks to be a great MT program! I’ve got a couple of questions I’m hoping someone can help me with:

  1. we will be staying at a hotel in Myrtle Beach…Ocean Blvd. I believe. I noticed CCU has a Conway address. Does anyone know about how long it will take to drive from there to the campus? My GPS indicates it is about 12 miles away, but I’m not sure about drive time since it is a tourist area…although I realize it is “off season” right now.
  2. since it is an all day event, do most kids dress for comfort (jeans and a nice top) or should she dress up a bit more? She wore a skirt and sweater for her other auditions, but they lasted just a couple of hours or so. I’m thinking since they do a campus tour, workshops and auditions, she might be best to dress for comfort, then change into nicer clothes for the play later in the evening. She does know to bring her dance clothing with her.
3). Do parents tour campus with the kids? I noticed we join them for lunch, but not sure about the rest. Just need to know what I will be ding while D is off with her activities for the day.

Thanks!

Hi TakeMyBreathAway!! I will let AlexaMT or kjgc or someone more in the know answer the 2nd and 3rd questions, but I can help you with the drive time. I was there last weekend and while it is “off”" season the traffic on 501 is still bad! My hotel was 8 miles from campus and it took me about 20 minutes to get from the hotel to the Edwards building. It is very easy to navigate the campus but give yourself some extra time to get through the 501 traffic.

Break legs to your D and enjoy your visit to CCU! It is a great program!!

Thanks for the info austinmtmom! The day starts early (7:30am). I’m hoping if we leave a bit before 7:00 we will be ok. Based on your experience, sounds like we should allow at least half an hour to get there. Hopefully there won’t be a lot of people out on the road at that time of the morning on a Saturday!
Glad you mentioned AlexaMT and kjgc…I’ve enjoyed reading their posts concerning CCU. That’s what put CCU on our MT radar!

I’ll see what I can do to help.

1.) Hwy 501 won’t be bad at 7:00am. Particularly FROM the beach to the campus. In the best of circumstances the drive from the beach (Ocean Blvd.) to campus is 20 minutes. If you give yourself 30, you’ll have PLENTY of time. Besides. 7:30 begins registration, we don’t actually start the festivities until after 8:00. We had to cap the group at 50, so this is going to be a large audition day. It would help if everyone doesn’t show up at the last moment.

2.) Students will be changing clothes during the day. I never suggest jeans for an audition. The goal is to show us a lovely look. That doesn’t necessarily mean a cocktail dress or suit. Consider it to be “business casual.” Dress to show us your look. In the afternoon the workshops somewhat demand clothing you can move in. If you are MUSTH, something to dance in. If you are acting, those workshops are also highly movement oriented.

3.) Yes, parents can tour with the students, sit in on the Q&A with current students, and sit in on the afternoon workshops. Some parents stay, some head back to the beach. Not sure where you are from but its supposed to be 60 and sunny on Saturday. That could be cold if you are from Florida, or shorts weather if you are from Michigan. I spend much of the afternoon chatting with parents, answering questions, and doing what I can do to make it all work.

Thanks for coming this weekend. We know how hard this all is, and try to treat everyone with the respect that they deserve. This is a difficult process all around.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Hi kjgc,

Thank you for the helpful information. Sounds like drive time won’t be an issue. We live in the upstate area of SC (about 4 hours from campus) and have vacationed in Myrtle Beach during the summer months. We’ve never been in February, looking forward to it!

D is very excited about this visit and can’t wait for the workshops. Sounds like it is going to be a wonderful day. Thanks to you and your kids and staff for putting this day together for us. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

See you Saturday!

kjgc…just wanna say you are one of my favorite people on this board, and that is saying a lot! So many folk are wonderful… too many to count, but you are awesome! Your posts are always so wonderful and respectful, and I know that your PMs to me (many years ago, it seems) were so helpful! Thanks to you (and many others) for making this journey that is so overwhelming, that much easier… and even pleasant!

Just stopping by to wish everyone headed to CCU safe travels! I know AlexaMT will be there bright and early tomorrow morning to check everyone in to get the day started. There should be lots of current students around tomorrow. If you have questions abut the program or CCU in general, please ask them. They could all be sleeping in on a Saturday morning but they are at the audition day because they want to welcome you and help you out as much as they can

Break legs everyone!!

Yes, I too, wish everyone a wonderful and successful day. Don’t think my D is working this one (she’s a freshman MT along with AlexaMT) but she’ll probably be around to help with any questions and I know she, too, would like to help welcome you all! Enjoy your day at CCU…it is a bright, little gem of a school with a wonderful program…and it seems to be getting quite alot of attention here on CC, as it so deserves!

D and I are here in our hotel overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean! It was night when we got here, so can’t wait to see the view in the morning. We came through Conway on the way and passed by CCU…again, it was dark so didn’t get a good look at it. We can’t wait to get there tomorrow. D is excited and of course a bit nervous. I hear her practicing her songs in the shower right now. LOL That never gets old! Thanks for the well wishes, I will pass them on to her. Hope to meet your kids tomorrow! I’ll let you guys know how it goes.

I think auditions went really well today! If anyone who auditioned (or didn’t, I guess) has any questions feel free to PM me or add me on facebook if you can figure out who I am. I met quite a few people today and I heard great things about all the auditionees so continue to break legs on any auditions to have left. Hope you’re time at Coastal was enjoyable- I had a great time hanging around and chating wtih whoever while waiting for my friend to finish her day.

Hi,
Just found time to write a report about D and my visit to Coastal on Saturday. We were checked in by AlexaMT, so it was nice to put a face with the screen name! She was very sweet and helpful. We were directed into a theater where kjgc was seated center stage and was greeting everyone as they entered. Several other faculty members were there as well. They gave an overview of how the day would go, then we were off. The kids were divided into 3 groups. D’s group started with a student meeting in which the current theater students shared their experience at CCU, then answered questions. This was very informative and much appreciated. All of them seemed very happy and pleased to be at CCU.*

Next, D had her audition. Since she was auditioning for MT, she did 2 songs and 1 monologue. Prior to being called in, they were taken to a room to warm up. Most of the faculty that had been onstage earlier were in the room watching the auditions except for kjgc, who was in the room next door interviewing each one of them after they finished their songs and monologues.

After auditions, we got to tour the campus. The student that led us on the tour happened to be from our area of SC, so that was kind of nice to get the perspective of a kid from our city (he wasn’t a theater major). The campus was beautiful! D was aleady really loving CCU just from the interaction with the current students and the faculty, the look and feel of the campus just added to her “Coastal love!”*

After the tour, the university provided a nice lunch in the pretty courtyard. The faculty was there as well, making themselves readily availabe to chat and answer questions. The weather was perfect for this event and made it that much more enjoyable.*

After lunch, the kids had 3 workshops (acting, singing, and dance). This was D’s favorite part of the day! When I returned to campus at the end of the day, she could not wipe the big smile off her face! She said she learned so much in that short amount of time and “if this is anything like college classes will be, I am going to love it!” Believe me, as a parent there is nothing better than seeing that much joy and enthusiasm in your child.*

The day concluded with a brief wrap-up and final Q and A session. By this time, I think everyone, the kids, faculty, and the parents, was exhausted! It had been a long, but very rewarding day.*

D and I both left with much love for the university and the program. We were very impressed with the amazing group of teachers and their experience in the field.*

All that’s left now is the waiting…ahhhhh…the tough part!*

Oh, AlexaMT, D hopes to hear your Alice Ripley impression someday!

Best wishes to all!

Glad you and your D had a good time! It was really nice to meet you. And my impression is pretty darn good- watch out. ;)
