So this weekend I had a college audition. We began with a workshop led by our adjudicator in which I began to perform and worked the beginning of my piece. In the workshop he seemed to like me. Then in the actual audition I sang my song and did my monologue, and once I finished he said that I have a really nice voice and am very well prepared, but his next challenge for me is to really get inside it because he can tell I’m very smart and I need to work on getting out of my head. He asked other people in the audition to do their pieces different ways, which I heard is a sign they like you. He did not ask me to try anything new in the audition, but I did work it before in the workshop. Is what he said to me a bad sign in terms of my admission status? Even if I am admitted, I have heard the “you seem really smart and trained but you’re too in your head” comments before- how do I work on getting out of my head?
While there is really no way I can speak to exactly what the adjudicator meant, to me, it sounds like they think you are thinking too much about the song and what you “should” be doing, instead of actually living through the song. Admissions are totally a crap shoot for college MT/Acting as you never really know what they are looking for, so unfortunately there is no way to really answer whether it will affect your admission. But, if you have heard these comments before, it is something probably should be working on as it will likely come up again with other adjudicators and “may” matter to them for admission purposes. BAL!
I’ve heard that comment a ton!! It isn’t necessarily a bad sign, everyone has stuff they need to work on and you will become better at getting out of your head with more training. This probably isn’t helpful, but try not to fixate so much on what the adjudicators say. Whether or not they give you adjustments during the audition is not an indicator of whether or not you will be admitted. Yes it CAN mean that they like you, but if they don’t it simply means they have seen all they need to (which could mean that they already decided they want to admit you). As the above poster said, college auditions are a crapshoot. Trying to analyze the adjudicators reaction/response to you and predict your results isn’t productive, and in the end all it will get you is a headache. Just focus on being the best version of yourself you can be, and somewhere out there is a program that’s a perfect fit for you.
