I need some help with appropriate audition songs choices for "Spelling Bee." I am a 17 year old tenor.

Any ideas for contrasting audition songs for female parts (particularly Logainne) in Spelling Bee? My D has several in mind but thinks they are not contrasting enough. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what they are…

Ah, I’m looking for an audition song for Olive!

Ah, I’m looking for an audition song for Olive!

As Long as He Needs Me is really low! Over the Rainbow in the original key is also very low and may be a good choice. Of course, I’m speaking for my D who is 1st soprano and these are at the bottom of her range! Maybe “What Does He Want of Me?” from Man of LaMancha. I’m certainly not an expert in this kind of thing, but for some reason this morning I can’t stop “talking.” lol

“I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from JC Superstar is a good musical match for the character of Nancy in Oliver. And for Spelling Bee, look for contemporary, uptempo songs and young characters.

I think she meant the character of Olive in Spelling Bee, and not the musical, Oliver. :D

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” would be a similar style show, thought it might be overdone in “Spelling Bee” auditions.

For a tenor, maybe “What Alan Likes” from I Sing. I don’t know what role you are going for, but I think it’s kind of similar to “I’m Not That Smart.”

For a girl, the first song that comes to my mind is “Live out Loud” from Jane Eyre. Also, maybe look at some songs from “13”, especially “What it Means to Be A Friend” for Olive.

Just some ideas. Good luck at your auditions!

Oops. I read it so fast, I thought she said Oliver! since it has the exclamation point. Pay no attention to me. lol

For the tenor:

Personally, if I was auditioning for 25th, I would want the role of Chip. Chip’s songs are very upbeat and corny and fun, so I would audition with these possible choices:

The Kite: You’re a good man charlie brown
Giants in the sky: Into the woods (Though sondheim is not recommended.)
I’m alive: Next to normal (Though not the same style of music, has similar upbeat tone.)
Purpose: Avenue Q
Take a chance on me: Little women

Those are what I would look like and try to find a good cut from. Good luck :)

so my director is more picky than others and says that it needs to be the same style of music and it also needs to have the same objective as your character. I can not find the song live out loud suggested above. The song from thirteen might work but i need other options. I also dont want to do anything from charlie brown. I am auditioning for Olive and i need alot of help! :)

Well, I don’t know if your auditions already happened or not, but you could look through songs in Avenue Q; they have similar styles of music, though I don’t know about objectives.

it’s probably really overdone right now, but maybe Frank Mills from Hair. I’d say Crissy and Olive are pretty similar characters, and The I Love You Song and Frank Mills have similar objectives, though ILY is about parents and Frank Mills is about a romantic interest. Same basic idea, though.

Vanessa Ray played Chrissy and Olive!
Sometimes I find it helpful to do that— look at some of the other roles of the actors who have played the part.

why spelling bee need singing audition?

:) Spelling Bee is a musical about kids doing a …spelling bee. :)
