I am wondering if it is appropriate to email the chair of a MT dept and ask if your selections for songs or monologue are appropriate. I can see this going both ways. The monologue selection seems overwhelming.

Do you have another trusted person you could talk to about the selection – a voice teacher or the director of your h.s. or community drama program? I agree that it could go both ways – either invite dialogue with the MT director, or annoy an already overwhelmed person… Personally, I would try to find a trusted resource like those listed above – a person who knows you (teacher/director) is much more likely to be able to judge the appropriateness of your choices for you.

Following on with what mommafrog recommends, here is some advice straight off the website of one of the top programs in the nation, the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music:

It would be difficult for someone that does not know you to judge the appropriateness of your material in meeting the goals described above.

The CCM website also provides a very good list of general “Do’s and Dont’s” that may help you judge your material (but you should carefully follow all instructions for audition material prescribed by each individual school that you audition for):

There is a really great post from doctorjohn (Otterbein MT Head) about auditions here:

There are recommendations for books on auditioning which contain lots of good advice on audition material in the “Books and other resources for MT students” thread (which is located in the group at the top of the CC MT page):

Good links from EmsDad. And Jazain, you can also post your choices here. Although we don’t know you personally, there are many experienced people here who could at least let you know if any of your monologues or songs are a definite no-no.
