Auditioning Outside of School?

I've heard some schools don't let you audition outside of campus/do shows outside of the school ones. Which schools are these and which ones DO let you audition?

I've been wanting to attend a school with a good musical theater program in NY but want to try auditioning for shows too for experience.

Thanks!

(Also are there any schools with BA's in musical theater?)

Marymount doesn’t let you audition outside of school but you can get a BA in Theater with a Minor in MT that you audition for…Pace however, fully supports students looking for outside work.

The Musical Theatre forum on this website offers a complete list of MT programs, both BFA and BA.

@NJTheatreMOM Thank you I will look into that thread – Sorry I am new to the forum and have yet to look through some of the other pages.

I would read the schools websites and even talk to the schools you are interested in. Some schools do say that it is a case by case issue with outside work. So you would work together with the program staff to see if it makes sense to take the job, or withdraw for a semester.

Marymount Manhattan has a policy in place to request work outside of school

Below is from the Theatre Arts Department Handbook; you should check to see if this is still in effect.

Extra- Curricular Production Policy
A student may appeal in writing for an exception to this policy to the
Chair of Theatre Arts who will consult with Theatre Arts faculty for a decision on the appeal.

UCLA does not allow outside auditioning, even for their “famous” students.
