<p>I was late to send in my AED and the only orientation left by the time I signed up was the very last one, August 29, the day before classes start.</p>
<p>I feel so unprepared. I'll be signing up for classes the day before classes start. I'll have to buy books that day too I guess. I'll also move in that day.</p>
<p>What can I do to prepare to take some of the load off of last minute preparation?</p>
<p>yeah i can see that as problem. maybe there’s a way you can talk to the college so you can get a sample schedule together, so you can buy your books eariler. or talk to some other freshman and see the basic classes you’ll have to take so you can get your books. moving in shouldn’t be a problem, just bring everything! and i heard people who registered last minute still get the classes they want so maybe you’ll be in luck.</p>
<p>I also attended the late AOP before my freshman year and I had the same anxiety about being unprepared. Just relax! Your advisor will help you schedule classes and you can get overrides to get into the larger classes. You can move in early (they don’t really care). Most professors don’t expect you to have the book until one week after the class begins. I would wait to see if the professor even recommends the books on his/her syllabus(i).</p>

<p>If you sign up for classes at orientation on the 29th then you have two days before classes to get settled and books. Also, like someone else said, you usually don’t need the books for the first week.</p>
<p>Me too, I ended up going to the last AOP before classes started. The main disadvantage you have is I had a full week to prepare before classes, while the last 2 years they’ve cut down on welcome week to just a few days. </p>
<p>What I’d do is look at schedule.msu.edu before you go to AOP to see what classes are full or not at that time, and make a general plan of what classes you want to take (with possible alternatives in case the classes are full when you go to sign up). You can add courses to your schedule builder (one of the functions of the website) and see how many seats are left, what teachers are teaching (I’d also check prof ratings at allmsu.com) etc.
Maybe take a look at the books you need, but I’d really not bother to buy them until after classes start so you know what books you need for sure.</p>

<p>Looking through the AOP website I found something about the reading assignment.</p>
<p>"All entering freshmen are expected to complete the freshman reading assignment by August 30 and bring the book when they return to campus in the fall. </p>
<p>You will receive a copy of the book when you check in at AOP. The discounted cost of the book will be automatically charged to your fall semester bill ."</p>
<p>Do they expect us to read it overnight? Should I just get the book beforehand? Is it even important to read the book?</p>
<p>Yeah you’ll get the book at AOP. It depends on your classes, generally you won’t bother with anything regarding the MSU book at all but once in a while your writing class (if you have one) might incorporate the book as part of the class. I’d take a look at the book just in case - it’s not too long. I’d read the wiki summary if you really don’t want to read it but generally the books they choose aren’t exactly boring. And don’t bother buying it ahead of time, it’s not worth it.</p>
<p>Didn’t read it and didn’t have to. Probably because I didn’t have to take a writing class because of AP lit/lang.</p>
<p>What are the chances of eventually getting in to a class the schedule builder says is full?
Like, is there a strong possibility of getting an override or should I scratch them off my list?

<p>I would leave it on your list, but have a few backups. There will be plenty of drop/adds the first week. Just check vigilantly. </p>
<p>I’ve been waiting for a week and finally someone just dropped out of the class I wanted and I scooped it up. It does happen if you check often.</p>
<p>What’s the class? Is it a big class? ie cem 141/142, 251/252, stt 200, phy 231? or is it a smaller class within your major?</p>

It’s WRA 110, CEM 251, and STT 231</p>
