Hello,
I am from Massachusetts, so it would be more convenient for me to only have to make the trip down once. Question: would I have significantly fewer classes and such to pick from, as others would be full, or is registering in August rather than June/July an acceptable option? I should place out of many classes from APs and intend to take proficiency exams in physics and chem.

It sucks, but a lot of the best classes are already (i.e. at this very moment) filled up for Fall '08 (by Sophmores, Juniors & Seniors). In that sense, it doesn't really matter if you come in Jun./Jul. or if you come right before school begins in August.

On the other hand, the remaining best classes continually fill up during late Jun. and through Jul. So, if you decide to sign up in August, you're picking from the bottom of the barrel.

If I were you, I would just sign up during August for three reasons. First of all, it's a long trip to get here, and beyond the registration, there isn't that much to do. Secondly, the classes left for you to pick from are limited either way. Third, you can always wait in August during the first few weeks for kids to drop the courses you want, and then you can take their places (and tons of kids drop every course).

I will be going home for summer, so I can only register after august 19. Are all majors crowded ?

does this mean that freshmen are at a disadvantaged?? im in dgs btw

^Of course it does. We're freshmen :p.

I dont think freshmen will be at a disadvantage, most juniors and sophomores will already be done with freshmen courses so it should not matter much.

I'm from NJ do you think it's worth it to make the trip in june or just wait until august andmake 1 trip?

Well , freshman classes are not just gen ed classes, Classes like calculus 1, english 1, chem 1, phys 1, are generally required to be completed in first year in order to take other higher level courses. The disadvantage is minimal. I only took 3 gen ed's my freshman year. I am guessing you will have enough gen eds to choose from, eliminating any disadvantages.

You should be fine, I missed my initial date...and I wasnt able to register until a few days before I moved in. The worst thing that SHOULD happen is that you'll have a lot of early classes first semester.

Another question, or two, really.

How does this fit in with AP or proficiency credits? We don't get AP grades until late July (though by phone earlier but that won't count for much), so what happens if we place out of a class, just sign up for a new one later? Isn't this an argument for coming in in August once it's clear what AP credits have come through?

And proficiency tests, when are those offered? How close are the chem or physics ones to the APs?

K, so i dont really get the whole registration thing becuz im brought up in the Indian system where the HS decides your schedule....

I understand that i cant register for first semester courses until im done with advising and stuff but when exactly can I register for second semester or sophomore courses? Do i need to wait for advising again becuz i already know a few courses that i want to take for sure next semester??

ok so then you can register for the next semester based on how many credits you have first semester. Does that mean if i have more credits this semester i have a greater chance of getting the classes next time??
How many credits do most people take?

The thing is i really want to take SPCOM101 Public Speaking as a Discovery Course because communication and public skills are something I really need to work upon.
If I take say 14-15 credits first semester would i be at a disadvantage If i wanted to register for that course?
