There is a chance that close family members will be moving to Austin, TX in the next few months/year. They have a D25. D25 will likely finish her freshman year of high school with a 4.0 GPA uw, taking all honors and 1 AP. She seems very goal oriented and indicated to me in my presence that she is looking to go to a very competitive college (not sure of specifics but maybe like a T30??). I worry about them moving her in the middle of her high school years, but it may not be able to be avoided. Does anyone on here know the high school scene in Austin well enough to opine about some good options for them to check out over the next few months, either public or private? Also, any experience moving a kid between sophomore and junior years in high school and impact on college admission? Thanks so much!!
But, the family needs to specifically understand how the D’s HS credits will transfer and where that will place her in terms of class rank at the potential new school.
Texas is one of the few states where most publics still calculate class rank. Top 6% at the end of 6 semesters currently earn auto admit to UT Austin (desired major not guaranteed) and it’s difficult to gain acceptance if a student is outside the top 6%. Other Texas publics offer auto admit for Top 10%.
Class rank can also impact admission to other top schools, and although she and the GC could explain the impact of the move (assuming it’s a negative impact), one would rather not have to do that.
