I'm in college, but this is a question for my brother, who's a high school senior and still in the application process.

I remember seeing somewhere (maybe on the Princeton Review website) that a school offered automatic non merit-based scholarships to Hispanics. Does anyone know of schools like this or a website where I can find this information? My brother doesn't have the highest grades, so that's why I'm seeking automatic scholarships. Or I guess merit-based scholarships with low qualifications would also be relevant.

Thank you entomom, I’ve already started browsing over that.

And to answer your questions, mom2collegekids:

Situation: My brother is a HS senior who we have been trying to motivate forever and he’s just now coming around and realizing that it takes hard work to be successful

Stats: Not good. 85 uw gpa. Some honors classes, but no AP/IB. SAT: He got around 500 in every section last spring, but he just took it again a few days ago and thinks he did better this time around. He doesn’t have a lot of EC’s, but he’s played jv/varsity rugby and has done some community service recently. He is also hispanic and has good essays, one of which focuses on his type 2 diabetes.

What state is he in: Maryland.

How much will your parents pay for college or does he need full aid: My parents don’t want to pay too much, but at the same time want to be fair to him (because I attended an expensive private school my first two years in college).

His college list so far is: UMD-CP (my current school), Towson, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, Florida State and a couple other schools (he wants to go to a big southern public)

Since you are a college student who has already gone through the process, I assume you know he won’t get any FA except federal for southern publics, right? That will probably be about the price of your private school.

Erin’s Dad is right to a point. He won’t get much aid…but a southern public is usually much cheaper than a $50k per year private… And, his stats aren’t high enough for merit.

Why does he want a big southern public? When people say that they often want the big spirited football campus…but some of his schools won’t really give him that.

Can you clarify…how much will your parents pay each year? If they want to be “fair” will they pay - say - $35k per year?
