I'm interested in Berkeley, but I have not taken any arts class in high school and I won't be able to do so senior year either. I'm otherwise a really competitive applicant with near perfect stats and decent EC's, though I am from out of state. Would I be automatically rejected for not having the required arts class on my transcript or do I still have a chance at acceptance? What is the rationale for having an arts requirement, if I have no interest whatsoever in the arts and limited room in my high school schedule?

You might qualify for eligibility through examination.

The rationale for having an Arts requirement is to expose the student to the fine arts.
If you had researched the prerequisites for UCs earlier you could have self studied and taken the AP Art History/AP Music Theory test last spring.
Spend your time on other applications.

The arts requirement is just as important as the English or science requirements in terms of if you don’t have it, they won’t let you in. The UCs get lots of applicants and obviously they’re gonna like the ones who have fulfilled their admissions requirements.

Can you take a summer class? Or concurrent community college course?

I think you mught be confused with this conflicting information.

If you fail to satisfy the a-g requirements, you can still qualify through admission by exam. That’s what I linked above. When I applied, there were 3 paths to eligibility and that was one of them. They seemed to have changed eligibility to admission for some reason and then removed one.

Wow, that’s great, thanks a lot. My score is well over 425, so will my application be considered like any other applicant?

I just have to say, I find it really strange that your school didn’t include an arts class in the list of required courses for graduation. My high school–and as far as I’m aware, every other public school in the area–has this requirement, and I made sure to get it out of the way freshman year with an easy digital design course. Then again, I was an in-state applicant, so our school was probably trying to make sure we were fulfilled as many of the requirements for UCs/CSUs as possible. Maybe the high school arts requirements are different for other states.

I think it is because you’re in-state. I’m from Illinois and my school and most that I know of have no such arts requirement. All arts classes are just electives.

I guess us Californians like our art.

^Yeah we need to focus more on…grammar…

Skiiz, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be reviewed the same way as any other (OOS) applicant.

I took a semester of photo 1 at CC – that fulfilled 1 year for the arts requirement.
