Just curious. What's the average GPA after someone spends a year at Berkeley when they enter as a freshman?

I don't know. But why measure yourself against other students who are taking entirely different courses from you, different course loads, difference outside school activities, etc. Just do the very best you can and try to improve each semester on the previous.

With so many different majors, it has to vary pretty widely....

How about this, why dont people post (if they're willing) their first year GPA, major, and classes they took.

what will this accomplish?

Just do your best. Don't worry about things like this. Well, try to do well obviously, but don't drive yourself insane.

ugh. you guys cut the crap....

2.7ish is the average for first year

im sure she/he knows that it varies widely based on what classes you take...and that it doesn't matter in the end and that you should try your best...blah blah blah

Where did you get that info nyaghooti?

According to http://gradeinflation.com/berkeley.html Berkeley's campus-wide GPA is around 3.1 back in 1996. I believe it is around 3.2 - 3.25 now. Accounting for the fact that upper division courses usually grade a little more leniently than large intro classes that are often weeders, I would guess on average freshmen earn around a 3.1.
