Just wondering if anyone knows the GPA average for engineering students.
I wasn't that thrilled with son's semester grades and he insists the average
is 2.5. Just looking for confirmation on this. Thanks in advance.

2.9 to 3.1, depending on the engineering majors

I wonder if the lower GPA mentioned by auscguy is due to certain classes? I am also confused by some of the comments here if the General Ed. required classes tend to up or lower the GPA.

I think generally GE classes in USC are pretty easy.
The lower GPA is due to more difficult engineering major like EE. The higher one is for ISE.

What is ISE?

Industrial and Systems Engineering

Are the Viterbi students still able to get into the fifth years master's program with a 3.0 GPA?

The program requires a minimum GPA of 3.2 as well as 2 letters of recommendation from professors. Students apply during their junior year.

Thank you so much for this information.

How well/poorly a new freshman does depends on many things--of course it helps if s/he had great prep from HS (including taking well-taught AP courses in calculus, physics and computer science). If s/he has been well-prepared AND is well able to adjust to the change from HS to college, including budgetting time & pacing, most do fine. It can be rough the 1st & 2nd semester trying to strike a balance.

Those on merit scholarships are expected to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, so if the average were 2.5 as your child contends, most would lose their scholarships. My understanding is that most (including all the students I know who are from my kids' HS) retain their scholarships (many would not be able to afford USC without them).

In general, my S says that GE courses are mostly much easier than engineering courses. Engineering curriculum doesn't allow all that much flexibilitly in course selection.
