average gpa @ gtown

umm just curious...what is the average gpa of students at georgetown?

hmm...good question. I have no idea. And I have no idea what anyone's GPA is. College isn't like high school where everyone talks about their grades. I literally have no idea if my friends are good students or not. All I would have to go on is how much they study.

Avg GPA of the class of 2005 was 3.47

How were you able to get it?

Really, that seems high. 3.5 is Dean's list and 50% of the student body is not on the Dean's list.

What dzl said is true. I heard it from a reliable source.

(That is why I am hesitant to say there is a lot of grade deflation here).

well if the average is 3.47, doesn't that mean that half of the students have above 3.47 and the other half has a GPA lower than 3.47, thereby making the dean's list around 50%

not necessarily...its the averageee.

scenario:
3 people have a 3.3 gpa
1 brilliant person has a 4.0 gpa

average = 3.475

wow we have a couple of math majors... lol. But yes it should be roughly around 40%, which is not surprising at a top university. At Harvard like 85% graduate cum laude.

georgetown2010, thats the median...

my friend is in SFS and she said she had to work her butt off to get like a 3.5 and she only took 4 classes...(she's amazing at like politics/english)

The 3.47 figure comes from John Glavin, who is a professor of English and the Fellowship Secretary.

WOW, the average GPA was a 3.47? Is that a result of grade inflation in an effort to get more into top graduate schools?? My son turned down Georgetown in 2002 to attend USC. He just graduated from the Business school (undergrad) and the top business grad there had a 3.98. I think the avg gpa was around 2.75 (but I not sure of the exact avg). I may be way off base but that 3.47 seems awful high.

That is the average GPA across all schools, so it could vary slightly. It is pretty easy to get a B or B- at Georgetown, but As are difficult and require more work.

DZL, do you actually think JG was serious though? When I heard him say that, I interpreted it more as a scare tactic, you-won't-get-a-Rhodes-with-a-3.5-so-work-harder type deal.

manderz, I think it was a little of both. It makes sense though: A- and B+ seem like the most popular grades around here, which average out to a 3.5.
