What’s the average GPA and SAT score for UIUC Comp. sci.? Also, would it be harder to get in if I’m Asian?
https://admissions.illinois.edu/Apply/Freshman/profile gives some frosh stats by division, though CS is probably one of the more selective majors within the engineering division.
Middle 50% range for computer science in engineering this year was 33-35 ACT, 1480 -1550 SAT, and 3.72-3.95 unweighted GPA. UIUC, as do colleges in general, denies that it discriminates against asians. Its undergrad, university-wide, asian student population is about 18%, for engineering it is about 25%, and for computer science in engineering it is about 38%. As a public university, internationals do not qualify for any need-based financial aid.
With both admissions and merit awards, there is often an emphasis on granting them to underrepresented minorities… For example, they have (or had) an emphasis keeping women near 50% of the incoming CS-Engineering class. The difficulty is knowing what is a URM for a specific major and when favoring them may cross the line to discrimination. And of course, the difference between what may be perceived as unfair and what is legally considered discrimination is an issue. For example, I would love to see where the larger “merit” scholarships go, but it would probably require an act of legislature to ever know these statistics, especially after the admissions scandal a few years ago.
that is the middle range for all of engineering. CS will be even higher.
^Actually the middle 50% ranges I provided above were for computer science in engineering, not just engineering college as a whole. You can find the ranges for each college here https://admissions.illinois.edu/Apply/Freshman/profile and then for each major here https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs If you are wondering what the middle 50% range is for the alternative math and computer science major in the LAS college, you can find it using that second link: ACT 32-35, SAT 1450-1540, unweighted GPA 3.6-3.95.
