A friend's child was rejected at College of Charleston....would like to attend a school in South Carolina, North Carolina or Virginia...a solid B student with a 24 on the ACT....interested in fine arts and education but this is not firm....not interested in the sciences. She is out of state for all the above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks.

Oldman, I'd look at Randolph Macon (either the women's or coed), Presbyterian, Lenoir-Rhyne, and a CTCL school that I can't remember in far western North Carolina. (I'll post it if no one answers it out) Emory and Henry!!!! Found the brain cell. I'd also look at NC-Asheville, and there are nice women's colleges like that one in Roanoke-Salem? Lots of schools meet her stats really well, and have nice merit aid chances.

Edited for Emory and Henry-really looks like a good school. Makes several lists.

D gets mail from UNC-Pembroke. Also-look at Winthrop-NOT Wingate, public in South Carolina. There are really some wonderful schools. We read everything available for those states last year. Marrs Hill is on some "Hidden" list. WCU is on the same list.Maybe Hidden Gems by that Washington Post guy. (Sorry I'm so flighty tonight-can't remember diddly.) There are really tons for her to look at in those three states that would be nice matches.

For her majors/interests (as of right now) and stats East Carolina Univ - Greenville, NC - would be a good match - rolling admissions also. BUT.....out-of-state applications are filled kinda quickly - all UNC schools only take about 18% from out-of-state - it is also part of the UNC system (16 schools in NC are part of the system) - but would be a good idea to give their admissions a call to see how things stand at this point - wouldn't hurt.

UNC - Wilmington might be an upper match - may even be a little of a reach - a bit harder to get into than ECU.

ECU has an excellent education program (has won some great national awards also) and also fine arts programs - and many other programs as well - which is good if a kiddo really isn't sure of what they want.
take a look - www.ecu.edu - may be a good choice for her.

That would be Guilford College, in Greensboro, NC...deadline Feb 15th. A phone call to admissions might get you some consideration for more time - they are very friendly and accomodating. (When we visited, there was a big sign on a parking space, "Reserved for ****** from CT!!). I wouldn't hesitate to call and ask.

Some of the schools you've mentioned have had their deadlines pass, but the UNCs are in March (1st :Greensboro. 15th: Asheville).

oldman, "Colleges That Change Lives". Once a book. Now a "marketing" consortium of colleges who "tour" together putting on their own fairs. D and I have attended because 3 or 4 interesting schools were on her list and when we left the fair there were three or 4 more to add. Another such grouping is the "Colleges of Distinction". Both maintain nice websites.

Hi Oldman. We "spoke" recently about schools in Va. I mentioned that I would be looking at Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason. I mentioned that I was looking in areas that had JCC's nearby so my NY daughter would feel comfortable. She's a B+ student and I'm guessing her SAT's will be between 950-1100. Of the 3 schools, George Mason is probably the most competitve, but they should be appropriate choices for a B student. We were hoping to see all 3 schools next week during Feb break (we get that in NY) but as my daughters basketball team is in playoffs, we're only going to have time to visit VCU and ODU. We'll visit George Mason during Passover. I did start a thread December 13th "Knowlegable VA &NC parents. and did get a lot of good info. Some of the schools mentioned were Elon-Guilford-East Carolina and others. You may want to check that thread out as I did get good info and some VA students added their own thoughts. As we're out of staters, I found that info helpful. I'm also keeping C of C on my radar for daughter, but I too don't know if her stats will get her in. Good Luck.

Lynchburg :-D ...with her stats it still leaves a lot open depending on whether she wants a small private or large public college or university. The only problem she may run into this point with applying late is deadlines passing but most of the previously mentioned schools along with Lynchburg either have March deadlines or rolling admissions.

good morning
Emory and Henry is in Western Virginia, not in North Carolina. Very fine school. Roanoke College in Salem has an excellent faculty and delivers quality in the classroom...nice little campus, too. Randolph Macon is exceptional in terms of quality education as well.

I'd also suggest a look at these schools: Catawba in NC, Elon in North Carolina, Guilford in NC, Presbyterian College in South Carolina. I believe all of these schools are on rolling admissions so she will probably have time to get an application to them if she acts quickly.

Application deadlines for some NC school - just FYI
ECU - March 15th
App State - March 15th
UNC - A - March 1st
UNC - Wilmington - already past deadline

Someone has already mentioned Roanoke, which I would look at. My S has been accepted there and his gpa looks more like a high B student, despite outstanding SAT's. Someone asked about George Mason and James Madison. It depends on what you're looking for, they are big universities, not LAC's like much of what has been mentioned. JMU is getting more selective too, and an out of state student with a B average may have more problems getting in. JMU is out in the Shanadoah, very pretty campus. George Mason is big, just outside DC so it has the urban connection.

Several very nice kids I know went to Lynchburg and parents and kids seem to really like the school. Personally, I know little about it but, for that reason it is on my radar screen. Towson State has been coming up a lot lately. It is in MD, in a very nice area north of Baltimore. Some other MD schools worth considering are St Mary's of MD, Washington College and Salisbury State. ST Mary's may be a bit of a reach, but the school is committed to taking students who are a good match. A visit and some interest would go a long ways there. UNCAsheville is another consideration. Another public LAC like St Mary's, so a great bargain even for out of state. If she is interested in being in a city, Catholic U could be an option.

Jamimom didn't mention it and I'm not sure anyone else did either but if she's willing to look in Maryland, and wants fine arts, Goucher college has a very good program. Their average GPA is 3.2 and their SATs of accepted students generally fall in the 1100-1300 range. So, it would be a possibility for her. Again, I believe they are also on rolling admissions (could be wrong about that though).
