Final College Visit List- I hope!

My daughter has narrowed down her list. Please comment on these schools. I will post her stats again. She has 1200 SATs(out of 1600), 3.8 unweighted gpa and top 10%. She will have 4 APs and she is a freshman mentor and peer counselor. We have already visited College of Charleston. This summer we will visit: Elon, High Point, UNC Charlotte, Queens University of Charlotte, Berry College, Ogelthrope, maybe Winthrop. She will be an elementary school major. Is Elon a match or a reach? Do we have too many safeties? Does she need a reach? She has decided against App State, UNC Asheville and UNC Willmington. She considered Wake and Vanderbilt, but she didn't think she had high enough SATs. She will get her second set of scores in a couple of weeks. They might go up. She also decided she wants to go to school in Georgia, North Carolina or South Carolina. We might add Virginia schools, if one was a great fit. She prefers medium to smaller schools, good mix of kids and a nice campus. Thanks again for all the help I have received on these boards!

candace, is financing college a question? If so , my advice changes. But assuming it does not, I think that Elon and Oglethorpe are matches, and the rest may be safeties. (I do like what I read about Berry. Some interesting things about their philosophy.) I agree Wake and Vandy are high reaches.

Can I suggest a few more schools in the region more in line (bur less and more selective) with Oglethorpe and Elon? Millsaps, Birmingham Southern, Maryville (right outside Knoxville), and here's one I'd be really interested in - Oxford at Emory. Check it out. It's a bit reachy and Emory may be scary but....check it out anyway. Oxford kids do great when they get to Emory. It might be just the thing for a kid with growing confidence.

Although a a reachy match Sewanee, Rhodes, and Centre are fine, fine schools to try for IMO and her rank and GPA are great. I have a dozen more for you if any of those seem interesting. You can P.M. me if you'd like. UNCC seems to be the "odd-man out" on her list.

My general impression is she can have a better list if she can decide the environment most appealing to her , and then step it up a notch or two in selectivity. She has a great record to be proud of and it seems she is downplaying her strengths with this list. JMO, and as always - I could be wrong.

Thinking more about the Ga, SC,NC area I'd also look at Presbyterian and Wofford. Both are very good schools. But hopefully those boundaries aren't sacred. ;)

thanks Crumudgeon. I sent you a pm.

candace
is U South Carolina too big for her?If her SAT's go up she could be a candidate for the Capstone program there.

Candace, please take a look at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg VA (<a href="http://www.umw.edu)%5B/url%5D">www.umw.edu)</a>. Her stats are right on and they have an education major. It's a gorgeous campus located halfway between DC and Richmond. I'm a little biased because it's my alma mater, but it's definitely worth a closer look if you're considering Virginia schools.

patsmom, I was working my way up the seaboard. I'd have made it to Mary Washington before long. LOL. Great save.

I am at a disadvantage on this one because I have never researched education departments but I felt based on their history that MW had one.

thanks, patsmom, she does have Mary Washington on her list. But, we probably won't be able to visit Virginia schools on this trip. But maybe, we could see some Virginia schools on another trip.

thanks, cathymee, but USC is too large. And I don't think she would qualify for the scholars program.

We looked at a few Virginia schools a few years ago for my daughter, also interested in elementary education. As I remember, you can not get an undergrad degree in elementary education from Virginia colleges anymore. Your undergrad major would be in an interdisciplinary major, then you attend grad school for your education degree.

thanks Dogwood, I did see that Virginia colleges do not have an education major. Ogelthorpe in Atlanta has a five year masters program. She is not ruling out the option of a five year program. U of Mary Washington is still on the list. Does anyone have any info on Queens University of Charlotte? It doesn't seem very well known. But my daughter is really interested in the school.

Queens is a beautiful school located in one of the prettiest parts of Charlotte. Very strong leaders at the school both current and past presidents. You really couldn't go wrong with this school.

wc21

thanks, wc21. We had a great visit at Queens. She also loved Elon. But she is more drawn to Queens.

We really loved UNC Chapel Hill yesterday. I know that it's not small, but it is such a beautiful campus. The feeling of school spirit and pride was obvious even in the summer. They have an education major. I think big schools feel more welcoming once a student has settled into a dorm and joined groups based on their interests.

probably not UNC, because my son is at Duke and the rivalry might split the family! (:

If she's an ElemEd major, then two things help narrow the choices:

Go to school in the state in which she wants to teach.

Go to a school from which she can graduate without debt.
