Avoid Living on Campus

I’m a sophomore at Vanderbilt.
Living on campus is too expensive. The dorms aren’t worth the price tag. I don’t like it.

On the resed site it says that students whose families live in Davidson county (ie Nashville) are not required to live on campus. Is there a way to exploit this policy and live off campus?

(This is not a thread where you try to convince me that living on campus is great or that doing this is immoral)

You could change your home/parents address in YES to Nashville, but I would have to imagine there’s some verification process before they allow you to move off-campus. Not entirely sure.

You can also just apply to live off-campus. As a rising junior, you have a fair chance of getting it. There are like 500 spots, and most seniors are willing to live on campus. If you can come up with extenuating circumstances, it may increase your chances. Making some argument based on finances or mental health is not unreasonable.

If you want to live near Vanderbilt, a lease is unlikely to be any cheaper, but you might be able to get nicer accommodations for the money. When you consider that all that’s included in the housing cost here (location, cleaning, security, WiFi, cable, 24/7 munchie mart access, electricity, water, etc), the price on campus does make a little more sense, though I do agree that it’s pretty expensive–particularly for students in doubles/singles without a common room and kitchen.

There are great deals if you live with multiple people or a bit further for campus.

S2 is a rising senior and applied for off-campus housing with 2 friends and was DENIED the request. not sure if there is an appeal process but they have decided to live in a suite in Towers again for senior year.

Since they finished the new dorm, I’ve heard that it’s quite difficult to get permission to move off-campus, even for seniors.
