New to Vanderbilt

My daughter was just accepted into grad school at Vandy and with my wife and I not being very knowledgeable about Nashville, can somebody please give us the skinny on living around the Vanderbilt area, rent vs buy, safe areas, and any other info that you may feel is relevant. Thanks in advance for any help.

This thread from last summer may have some helpful information:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vanderbilt-university/1166350-apartments.html?highlight=off+campus+housing

Congrats to your daughter!

Thank you 2VU0609! It was very helpful. She is very excited about the near future prospects. Weighing the position offers vs. grad school. I think she is leaning towards grad school and from the way she has described the program she will be entering, it sounds pretty intense.

My D rented a condo in a very nice complex across the street behind The Commons. That is an excellent location. A lot of grad students seem to live in the Ackley area, and that is relatively inexpensive while still being safe. There are some inexpensive places in areas near campus my D considered “sketch” … good to just go by in the night to get a feel for it. If your D wants to live close to campus but far enough away to take advantage of lower rent, Sylvan Park is a great neighborhood. D lives there now, and there are quite a few grad students nearby. Another area that is decent is around Hillsboro Village. D rented a room in a large house near HV, near Taco Mamacita’s. That wasn’t too bad, although I prefer Sylvan Park.
