<p>Hey, so I've got some questions about living off campus. I'm an upperclassmen and I recently got married. Do they automatically let you live off campus if you are married? Also, do they give you your financial aid to live off campus, like they do when you are living on campus? Any help from current students w/ experience w/ this would be greatly appreciated.</p>
<p>My brother who is a junior this year at Vanderbilt moved off campus and I know Vanderbilt is paying his rent at the apartment which is like 600 yards off of campus on 23rd. He even says it is a little source of income to him. Vanderbilt really likes to have a high “On campus” percentage so they will pay it for you.</p>

I don’t see how this is possible. Are you saying that your brother’s finaid package went unchanged despite his move off-campus, and he’s using his grant to cover the cost of his apartment? That’s different from Vanderbilt paying for students to live off-campus, especially because Vandy requires undergrads to live on-campus unless they’re granted an exemption. If Vandy simply paid students’ rents, why wouldn’t everyone want to live off campus?</p>
<p>My d lived off-campus last year, when she was a senior. She knew she had applications for grad school or fellowship programs to complete, and she thought that sharing an apartment with just one person would make her more focused than living with several others in Towers, where she was junior year. As it happened, her first choice came through for her in November, so she probably could have enjoyed another year living on-campus. But she never had any regrets about living at Village at Vanderbilt, which was maybe 20-25 percent more expensive than campus options. She didn’t qualify for finaid, so I don’t know how living off-campus would affect that.</p>
<p>D and her roommate had to jump through a number of hoops to be granted permission to live off-campus, and she knows several kids who were denied. According to Vandy’s webiste:

<p>My brother has a very good scholarship at Vanderbilt and due to some circumstances with his housing situation, the housing dean allowed them to move off campus and Vanderbilt payed for the cost. He said that all the money that Vanderbilt was giving him for board now goes toward the least expensive apartment. He applied for Mayfield housing, did not want to live there after they got it, and somehow managed to get off campus.
I think he hit some stroke of luck as well!</p>
