I have been admitted into UMich in the School of Engineering. I have been selected as one of the School's Shipman Scholar nominees, so it would not be unfair to assume that I am one of the top candidates entering the School of Engineering. However, that is the only award that I have received any word on thus far. So I am curious as to when, approximately, other awards will come in. I will not be receiving financial aid, and so I'm only wondering about scholarships, both university-wide and school-specific.

Here are my stats, if they help:

Objectives:
35 ACT - 36 S, 35 M, 35 R, 35 E
800 on SAT Math II
800 on SAT Bio (e)
5's on AP English Lit, AP Chemistry, AP Calc BC (and AP subscore), and AP Bio

Subjectives/extracurriculars:
Captain of swim team
NHS
Band
Full Orchestra
Youth Group
Volunteer at hospital
Volunteer for confirmation retreats
I wrote a really good essay on the CommonApp (it made a couple teachers cry when they read it) and had good supplemental essays for UMich.

Looking in years past, it appears that most information has already come out by this time, so I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has heard anything or if anyone else knows when they will hear their scholarship package information?

The Engineering Scholarships of Honors have been announced, at least to the EA admitted students. There may be still some other scholarships to be announced later. As Shipman semifinalists will still get a smaller scholarship, you may considered yourself a recipient of merit aid already. EA admitted students should have received the financial aid package already. Did you check your Wolverine Access? If you are not expecting any financial aid other than merit scholarships, you probably need to wait till the scholarship announcement.

I know of many students who have already received the Engineering honors scholarships, in and out of state. Your stats are mostly in line with those that have been awarded already, though some are stronger.

I would not assume anything other than the Shipman monies, in whatever amount, will be awarded to you.

Hope that helps. You have been admitted to a top school, amongst top students. Scholarships are not to be expected, even at your level, so you should be very pleased with the Shipman possibilities.

Nice to hear about an incoming Shipman! If you have any questions about the scholarship or the Weekend, please message me. :)

If you are out-of-state, you should expect substantial scholarships from CoE even if you aren’t a finalist. Some of my OOS engineering Shipman friends have full tuition even though they were not finalists. Nearly all of them got at least 10k/yr after Shipman, but most are in the 25k+/yr range I believe. CoE is very generous to Shipman.

If you are in-state, you should probably not expect any more scholarships. It may happen, but it is much less likely.

I forgot to mention, but this happens after you are notificated about your award from Shipman–not before because the University takes the Shipman scholarship as your primary scholarship. You’re supposed to find out a couple weeks after Shipman Weekend, but for the last couple of years, it’s only been a couple of days after the interviews. I think I found out the Thursday after the Weekend.

Billscho, I have checked Wolverine Access, and there was nothing there. Thank you for your information though, that’s exactly what I was wondering.

Decorative, believe me, if all I have is the Shipman opportunities, I would feel incredibly honored! I know that what I’ve already got is a huge honor. I just figured because there are so few Shipmen out of each college (5-10), there would be more money to go along with it for OOS kids, but maybe I’m wrong.

Musefsa, thank you for your information. I am out-of-state (sorry to everyone, I hadn’t made that clear yet). When were those Shipman friends you mentioned notified of their money? Before or after the weekend?

As a sidenote, it kinda seems there are two options: 1) they are waiting until after Shipman weekend to give out other scholarships to the Shipman or 2) I simply didn’t win anything else. Is this oversimplified or…?

After. Some of them received awards beforehand, but they were put on hold once they were notified that they were selected for Shipman.

Since you’re out-of-state, at most, if you aren’t a finalist and CoE doesn’t give you that much, to pay a little over in-state tuition. More likely, you’ll pay $10-15k/yr + room & board or just room & board. Congrats!

It’s the 1st one for you.

Wow. I figured there would be a little more money coming in. That makes a lot of sense–they only select a few kids for Shipman, so I’m sure that the schools want to keep those they select. That takes a lot of pressure off from this weekend; I was getting pretty nervous.

Fingers crossed for my future as a Wolverine!
