Award of Excellence Scholarship?

I just got a letter in the mail saying that I was nominated/qualified for an Award of Excellence Scholarship? Has anybody heard anything about this before? It says that the amount in the scholarship is based on need and usually ranges between 2 and 12 grand a year. Does anybody know how common/rare this is? Is it indicative of acceptance into the honors program and other scholarships, or is this the only scholarship I am going to be offered from Michigan?

You have a 1580 on your SAT, so you are definitely going to get into the Honors college...if you are planning to attend the college of LSA. Engineering does not have an honors college.

As for scholraships, you may get more...or you may not. Who knows? You should call the university and check it out.

But if you get $12,000, your Michigan education will be pretty affordable. That's like getting $20,000 from a private university.

bacchanalian,

I believe you must demonstrate need for "Award of Excellence". However, there are other strictly merit scholarships (e.g. LSA Merit, Shipman) for which you are automatically considered. Based on your stats, I would speculate you have a good chance.

Their website's a little confusing because some scholarships are sponsored by the University, some by the individual colleges, and they are documented in several locations. Search around, or try:

for those lsa scholarships, how crazy must your stats be to be awarded?

for fall 2003, they gave out 70 out of a class of 4000, mean GPA 3.93
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/UofM/Content/lsa/document/lsa-profile-2004.pdf

70 out of 4000 = ~1.75%. The Honors Program is roughly top 10%, so its 75th pctile should equate to top 2.5% (note not everyone offered takes Honors). I'm guessing you'd want to be a tad above that (1480) as a rule of thumb.

wow bianchi, thanks for all the links i've been looking for stuff like that

I guess i'm still curious about how competitive/selective this award of excellence thing is though. I'm wondering what the criteria for the nomination are and how indicative it is of the strength of my application in general, especially since this could help shed some light on my chances at other universities

I received the same letter in the mail; it says it's "highly selective". But, who knows? They give out 200 per year and all you have to do is submit the FAFSA, which you should do anyway.

What kind of stats do you have browski?

i got the letter too, and i have yet to hear from honors
i have a 1510, and i have a wieghted 4.0, but now my unweighted is low (low being 3.85...because of an 89.4... i know) thanks to senioritis... the stats they have is a 3.95 wieghted, and i have decent ECs, strongs recs, strong essays, and in the 11th percentile of my class, tons of APs.. is honors gonna happen?

I have lower SAT scores than you two...a 1410 (780M, 630V), but 4.0 unweightd GPA, 10 APs, ranked 1/343 with decent ECs.

well then again, your rank is excellent, so i would say you come out ahead of me anyway.
are you in honors?

Where else are you guys applying?

Ranisparkle, I applied to the College of Engineering, so...as far as I know...there's no honors college for it. If I'm wrong, someone let me know, haha, but otherwise haven't heard anything.

When do they contact us if we are being considered for those other scholarships that bianchi23 mentioned? I also got the Award of excellence letter like in early December.

browski8, ah yes, i think you are right that there is no honors for eng. i applied LSA, and am too lazy to send in a request for them to consider me (and maybe slighty too sure of myself that they will consider me) for the honors college. i dont know when they are sending out other fin aid stuff, i really really need merit aid though!! anyone know how many they nominate for this award of excellence thing? couldnt be too many

It seems like a lot, but they get around 25,000 applications i think, so it must be fairly selective

do you have to apply fafsa before they send this scholarship?

how do you know its 200?

see the links above. 200 awarded, so they must offer more than that.

I believe I ended up with a merit scholarship after being accepted into Honors LSA... $1500, I think? (Don't really remember the exact info). For those still waiting for the news, my GPA was a 4uw but my SAT I was only 1490.

Good luck everyone!
