Awarded a $30K local scholarship as a junior. How will colleges view this?

Obviously it's a plus, it's the most prestigious award in our small town. However, is this something that will stand out to colleges or are these sorts of things fairly normal? How can I emphasize the importance of this on a resume? Thanks!

Bump...surely someone knows how common scholarships are and how they're regarded.

I would expect them to view the scholarship as recognition for your achievements. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that admissions committees will be more interested in the achievements for which you were recognized than they will in the fact that you were so recognized.

I second Greybeard.

What did you do to earn this scholarship?

Colleges will see savings of approximately $7500 per year. So much for financial aid!

Word to Greybeard.

Scholarships are common, but not scholarships of that size. Congratulations! If the merit that earned it is some big passion of yours or an extension of your academic excellence, it will definitely look good. How often/how many of these does your town give?

Thanks Greybeard, that definitely makes sense. Do think they'll be less/more inclined to award me admission because I've been publicly and monetarily awarded?

Butcherer: Just one a year. Thanks! It was a huge shock, honestly.

Fabrizio: It wasn't any one thing. I had to submit a resume and essay detailing my future plans, and was then interviewed. All of the finalists were pretty equally qualified (we're all ranked 1, 2, 3, and 4 and we're all really involved EC wise), but I think the reason they awarded it to me was because of my passion for the arts and more leadership roles than the others, which really mirrors the founder of the scholarship's roles.

Well, there you go. Focus on your passion for the arts and your leadership roles to help make your essay show your strengths.
