My daughter just received her first award notice from a college that accepted her. It says she gets a scholarship and merit award for $17,000. This may sound really dumb, but the rest of the money is from loans, right? There is another 23k to go. What is the next step. Do we apply for loans through the school and they send that out in another email? How does this work?

Usually award letters include loans at a school this expensive. Is it an award letter, or is it a scholarship notification? Those are two different things.

Have you filed a FAFSA?

Well, it mentioned the Presidential Scholarship, so I assume it was a scholarship notice. I did both the FAFSA and CSS Profile. What’s interesting, also, is their website has a different tution figure than the one that is mentioned in this email. No loans of any type were mentioned–just that the tuition would be reduced.

That sounds like it is just your scholarship notice. The financial aid award notice will include the scholarship, as well as loans & any other aid they are offering.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to look again and will repost more detailed information. I do remember not seeing any mention of a loan of any type. My daughter will have to sign back into the form for me to see and she’s not here now. It certainly would be nice if colleges sent the notice to both the parents and the student.
