When applying to top private universities, what awards do ppl usually put?
I know ppl put national awards and such, but what about the small ones like an award from the english department for getting the top mark...business student of the year etc.? Are these awards insignificant?

While national awards look outstanding, not many people get them. Yes, those that do tend to be hardworkers and fit into top ivies. However, when I visited Yale a student said a lot of people don't have national awards. Getting school awards are not insignificant because they show how you do against other students in your environment. If you receive an award for best english student, or best business student, you should include that on your application because it shows your strength and where you stand in your class/school.

Yea, I disagree with many people on here that say that you shouldn't put local/school awards. Obviously you should make room on the application for your major awards, but other smaller awards also have their place.

anyone thinks I shouldn't put them on the application?

I think it's better to put something than nothing. If you don't have national awards put the awards you do have, it's certainly better than having a blank sheet.

Putting "best english student" or "best ______ student" is not insignificant, nor an extremely big deal. It shows you are one of the top in your class, and it also hints that you are respected in your school environment. Things like high honors do seem slightly insignificant because they see A's on your transcript and know you obviously made it.

^true but I definitely don't recommend leaving the section empty if those are your only awards

Put in all your awards however insignificant in summarized form on your
additional information section. They are your awards. Do not let any
one tell you how they are insignificant.

Somone who consisently has got the best student award in the courses
they have taken shows academic aptitude that is sure to stand out.

Also check with your GC if they put awards on the back iof the transcript.
Offer to format for them or send in a digital versin they can cut and paste
or photocopy from onto the back- this way you make sure nothing gets
left out.

can awards make up for a not so great EC?

username: you're Canadian right? what kind of awards do you have cause I have a hard time finding canadian awards other than the merit awards.

let's say USAMO (okay i don't have it now, but I'm pretty close and there's still half a year left to study)

list anything you have...but keep your accomplishments in perspective.

For example, definitely put down "Top Junior" or whatever you got in your school; just know that this isn't equal to winning a national essay contest or something. It is valuable because it shows you are the top in a small pool; which is better than an indeterminate rank.

what about a test you took, like AMC, but a different one on
a national level, and got a A grade?
