Awkward Situation

Hi everyone,

Well, I received the admission desicions from the schools just like everyone else did. The problem is, I am in a very awkward situation right now. I applied to six schools, including one day school, and all of the boarding schools wait listed me. Specifically, Andover, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Deerfield, and Peddie were the ones who put me on that list.
I have yet to hear from the day school, but I am 99.9% sure I will be accepted there.
Furthermore, there is also something of note which I would like to share: I applied for full financial aid, and I truly do need it. So, I would like to ask you guys two questions in particular:

Could the completly wait list outcome possibly be related to my financial needs and the economic recession, or was it just a coincidence and those were just how worthy of a student I was?
and
Should I commit to the day school now (assuming I am accepted), or should I hold out for the wait listed schools.

And finally, what are the chances for me getting off of the wait list with full FA for one of the aforementioned schools, especially Andover and Hotchkiss?

Thanks in advance.

Well , honestly getting off a waitlist is very hard especially with a lot of fa. in this economy. I suggest you work with what you have as options right now.
GOOD LUCK:)

To answer your questions:
“Could the completly wait list outcome possibly be related to my financial…” –> I think it’s more because of your qualifications than finance. I also applied for tons of aid, just as many ppl here. When I got waitlisted, I immediately thought “wow, it all comes down to money” (I got 99% on the SAT, not even SSAT, and very very good GPA + extra activities). But then, I noticed that many ppl here (who also applied for large finaid) got accepted at the same schools, they have some hooks or better record than me. I know it’s easy to blame it all on $$$, but I must admit that ppl who are accepted are really excellent, and there’re things I could/should have done better.
If you’re an intl student, $$$ could be a bigger factor, but if you’re domestic, I don’t think you should blame it on $$$.

“Should I commit to the day school now…” –> there’s no reason why you shouldn’t stay on waitlist of a school you like (not every school though). However, is your day school really good? does it require deposit? If you say yes to these, er, then I guess you should commit to it.

Your situation is much better than mine  I got waitlisted at more schools than anyone here.
Me: International
Financial Situation: Ask for tons of aid
Waitlisted: Middlesex, Cate, Deerfield, Berkshire, St George’s, Groton, Hotchkiss, Andover
Rejected: Exeter, Taft, Westminster, The Hill, St. Paul’s, Lawrenceville, St. Mark’s

I’ve been asking around and here’s the data for the waitlist of 11TH GRADE ONLY.
Groton: accepted: 1-2; waitlisted: not sure how many
Middlesex: applied: 70; accepted: 2; waitlisted: a bunch
(they accepted so few because they really have 1-2 openings only, for 11th grade)
Cate: not sure how many accepted, over 20 girls waitlisted (~same number for guys)
Hotchkiss: over 20 girls waitlisted (~same number for guys)

Of course I feel hopeless because at every school I asked, they waitlist a lot more ppl than the number of spots they have. But I don’t know about 9-10th grade. And waitlist’s really a game of luck.

first, don’t ever doubt your abilities, being on the waitlist usually means that they DO want you but can’t give enough money for you to attend. the recession is a big reason that so many people who appied for heavy FA got waitlisted, or worse yet, down eight rejected. I got rejected by Choate plainly because i needed money, it’s stated in the rejection letter.

Getting waitlisted is, believe it or not, much much better than rejected. You still have a chance, and I think you should contact the school and ask if it’s even possible to get accepted w/ enough FA. It might be difficult but absolutely not impossible.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Sorry for stalking, exoveerotch, I read your Deerfield thread. We both applied to Deerfield, intl, 11th grade, need lots of aid. I got waitlisted and you accepted (and of course, many ppl got rejected). So I think it’s not all about money =) It’s your ability or application that counts.
