Awkwardness of asking for recs

i am! (10char)

I am too!!!

I think it’s so weird that middlesex asks for a foreign language rec. Do you all have to do that for any other school? And what were your teachers responses when you asked them, since foreign language teachers aren’t usually asked.

I have middlesex and st marks needing foreign languages or humanities( if u don take foreign language)

Great advice so far on going to your teacher after school, or at a less busy moment. Start by asking “do you have a minute or two to talk?” When the time is right, you can ask something along these lines:

“I’m applying to several boarding schools this year and the application asks for a recommendation from an English/Math/Foreign Language teacher. I was wondering if you would be willing to write a recommendation for me?”

It’s best to phrase it as a question of whether the teacher is willing to recommend you rather than to say “I need you to write this for me.” Give your teachers LOTS of lead time before the deadline. (teachers are busy too!)

Most teachers will be very nice about this. Some will be surprised, but they probably won’t take it personally that you are leaving their school. Be prepared to answer a question or two about boarding school (stay focused on the ‘opportunity to be more independent’ and skate away from saying ‘I want to go to a better school.’) It’s rare that a teacher will refuse, especially if you provide enough advance notice–I’m sorry that woowoo20 did not have a good experience! However, that’s the exception and not the rule.

(Most) teachers are actually just normal human beings. No need to be too worried or fear asking for recommendations. Most of us are happy to help our students achieve their goals!

That is what I did ALBION!!! and my english teacher said no I’m busy…-.-
then when she had time I asked her if she could write the recs and she said the school has a policy of not being able to write over 4 ( which didn’t exist)
ended up having my dad send an email to the deputy head complaining about her attitude and she agreed to write a statement. uhhhh well at least all my other teachers are amazing and great advice albion!!

Was this a middle school teacher? Or are you in high school?

Middle school all I can say is she might as well just wrote she ended up writing smthing anyways

oh but she teaches high school too my school is k-12

Oh I see. That’s weird for a middle school teacher to say though. Because you would be leaving the school most likely anyway. It would make more sense if you were thinking about leaving your current high school, like me. I just can’t believe you had to go to all that trouble!

How many schools are you all applying to?
