I'm wondering if anyone else feels awkward about asking their teachers for recommendations. I don't mind asking my counselor or english teacher because they know I'm looking at boarding schools and as far as I can tell, they're cool with it. My math teacher, though, might be a little disappointed, and I don't even know what I'm going to do about my "other teacher" recommendation-- Deerfield says it has to be a current academic teacher, and I don't really want any of my other teachers to know I'm applying til I'm gone. The problem is that all my teachers like me and I don't want them to take it personally that I'm leaving! D:

I know exactly how you feel!!! I’m scared to give my recs in on monday because I dont want my teacher to tell the whole school and I dont want them to be sad. It’s going to be hard for my guidance counsler because I’ve never talked to her.

they’re just going to be jealous and hate cause we’re applying to be with the best
or if they’re cool enough they’ll write the best recommendation ever.

Don’t say you are definitely leaving. Just say you are applying because you want to have options for next year and will decide in the spring. And hand over the request with a compliment to the teacher on how much you like their class and respect their opinion, and that is why you are asking them.

@heps1996,
Well if you’re school is K-12 then it might be awkward. For me, it wasn’t awkward b/c my teachers already knew I was applying to BS and my school isn’t K-12.

Understandably can be awkward but you won’t have been the first to request recommendations. If they do like you, then use it up for all it’s worth, don’t be shy. Many teachers are honored to be asked and sometimes bolsters their own ego. One important piece of advice, don’t wait until the holidays to hand in the recommendation forms. The last thing these teaches want to be doing is filling out forms during their vacation.

I thought it was going to be pretty awkward, too! I handed mine in after school but my teachers were very nice about it, it wasn’t that awkward.

It was pretty awkward for me…I’m sure that my teachers didn’t think I was a prep school candidate (just take one look at my clothing - not exactly J Crew) and I’m kind of the top of my grade so I’m sure they didn’t want me to go to a private school (im in a large suburban public school now). You know - b/c the NJ public schools thing - the teachers need all the support they can get. They were all like, “Oh no we’re going to lose you!” I felt really bad after that. Yeah…it was just weird all around. I almost thought they would sabotage my stuff but obviously they didn’t (I hope)

Same here, and i go to a religious jewish school, and they would not approve of any of the BS schools, so i am limiting myself to specific teachers, although guys don’t feel to awkward, last year i tried to transfer elsewhere, and my math head told me he hoped I didn’t transfer, but he’ll help me and wished the best for me, so they care about you, just be polite and just say your looking into it. Request they don’t tell others, because you don’t want rumors spreading in the office that your not returning, (regardless what you and your parents are REALLY thinking)

@ the topic.

TELL ME ABOUT IT.

I only asked for 3 and I was very nervous when I had to ask.

I know this is a really late response to this thread, maybe some of you all don’t even use your accounts anymore, but I need advice! What exactly did you say to your teachers when asking them. I am currently enrolled in a high school, and a sophomore, so it’s kind of awkward.

lol and I thought it was going to be awkward asking as an 8th grader…

haha why would that be awkward? You’re leaving the school anyway?

Because no one applies to boarding school here, and we don’t give our recommendations directly to our teachers (they go through our counselor) so I don’t have anything to really give them…I guess it’s not as bad as some 9th/10th etc. graders…

Oh I see. Yeah I’m basically freaking out haha. I don’t know of anyone that has switched to boarding school from my school so we’ll see how this goes. I’m asking tomorrow!

Helloel! What are you going to say? I’m either asking this week or next…SO nervous. Haven’t told anyone I’m applying.

Good news! My advisor was completely cool with it! I was just like “i am a applying to boarding schools for an option next year and will you fill out a rec, i really love this school ive just always wanted to go to boarding school and I was going to apply to boarding schools from 8th grade but I was too scared, but I think I’m ready now” He was familiar with the process and was glad that I was thinking about it.

Are you in a high school already? or are you applying from 8th grade?

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!! I still need to ask my teachers for recommendations, and I know they know that I’m going to ask sooner or later, but most of my teachers are saying that they think I am wasting my time going to boarding school, and I should just go into college.

I’m more afraid of the EC recommendations, because one of the people that I would love to do a recommendation for me found out that I was going to boarding school through my mom, and she was not happy. I mean, she just didn’t want me to leave, because I’m her favorite of the members and her assistant of six years. Also, she wants me to travel around my state as an ambassador to make people get more interested in studying in math/history subjects, because I have the best test score in it for my district.

Also, I was wondering, what do I do if the person writing one of my recommendations are not good with grammar or sentence structure?

Thanks, and good luck to all of you guys getting your recommendations!

Would this be like a foreign language teacher? Because I was wondering the same thing. Whatever you do, don’t change it. If it is a foreign language teacher they will assume, but if it is not you could shoot an email if you think they won’t understand.

Also, what grade are you? Why did your teachers want you to go straight to college? Are you applying for PG year or something?

Also I have a pretty urgent question about recs. You know how you have to fill out a candidate profile before you have access to the recommendations tab at Gateway to Prep Schools? Someone who has done this, do you know if they are online forms or if they are to be filled out? I need to know what they are because I need to get my recs done first, but I’m not ready to submit by candidate profile.
