This message is an update for candidates on Choates Waitlist. As you may know, the reply date for admitted students is this Friday, 4/10. These replies will determine our flexibility in going to the Waitlist. As I mentioned in an earlier email to parents, this process typically comes down to that deadline; we know this can be frustrating and nerve wracking and we are working hard to get answers about our ability to make additional offers of admission as soon as possible.

Im writing this email slightly earlier than planned because we have learned one important fact thus far:

Our financial aid yieldthat is the number of admitted students with a financial aid grant accepting our offer of admissionis higher than we had anticipated; therefore, we will have no financial aid to offer Waitlisted candidates. Most years, financial aid availability comes down to the 10th along with the space issue. That is not the case this year. I am truly sorry as I know this is a real factor for many great candidates on our Waitlist. I wanted you to know this unfortunate reality as soon as I did so if you have other options with deadlines you can respond in a timely manner.

The next email communication you can expect from me will be on the 10th, or earlier if our enrollment situation dictates. If we do have the opportunity to make offers of admission, they will be handled by phone by an admission officer. We always do our best to make offers of admission on the 9th if at all possible, keeping in mind a deadline of the 10th for other schools you may have offers from. Be aware that we know some schools (specifically day schools in our area) have a deadline of April 9, and we are working with that in mind.

We truly appreciate your patience and your continued interest in Choate.

Sincerely,

Ray Diffley III
Director of Admission

Well at least I can cross off Choate from my list =/

With apologies to those who may have requested to be taken off our WL–I’m emailing for the quickest of updates as I know many of you have deadlines with other schools.

As of this morning April 9th, we will not be going to our 5th Form (11th grade) or 6th Form (12th grade/post graduate) Waitlist

4th Form (10th grade) looks very tight and we may not be able to go to the Waitlist there either—will know more in 24 hours.

3rd Form (9th grade) Boarding and Day are still possible at this point—the enrollment picture is getting clearer.

Again, my apologies for the brevity of the message and the directness of its content, I do understand folks have to make plans.

Sincerely,

Ray Diffley III
Director of Admission

Even though this isn’t my first choice its still a bummer.BTW I applied for tenth grade.

Imo there is something wrong with Ray Diffley III giving Choate waitlist updates like this. It reminds me of a back room bookie parlor with horse races going off.

He is just being considerate in keeping people updated and current so that they may make alternative plans, because the deadlines are imminent. That is far more considerate than keeping people in the dark.

I agree with pan1956. That’s in line with my impression of Choate in general. They are genuine and considerate. I know it doesn’t sound like from someone who has just declined their offer, but I truly like the school a lot.

Watertester, I must tell you thaat they have been very very correct and considerate with us. Our only problem is that we got to know Kent very well and feel great about the school and Choate is sort of an unknown. So we are leaning toward Kent. Ivy matriculation statistics do not impress me, because they merely reflect the students that attend the school, not the school itself. My son will be better off in the top third at Kent than in the bottom quarter at Choate. Do you agree???

Well, honestly I think from the perspective of staying on top, the whole boarding school idea is not really helping. I see my son to easily be among the top in a local day school, which routinely sends kids to ivies every year. But he loves the boarding school of his choice and is willing to take on the challenges, even after we tried to “scare” him with all the possible obstacles he might encounter. I don’t know. You asked a question I don’t have answers to.

Kudos to Diffley for the communication! All one can ask is for the most information possible and I think Choate should be commended for being forthcoming.

@Sarum… Or you could be like those people who keep giving updates “oh yeah, high chance” and not follow through. Not sure what you prefer, I know what I do.

I think that the way Deerfield and Hotchkiss are handling the waitlists is unconscionable. There is too much mystery and intrigue about them. Mr Diffley was very upfront as soon as it was possible to disclose information. Any word on waitlists at the Hades schools? I predict that there is going to be a ton of movement.
