I'm transferringfrom a private institution where I was a film production major, to UC Berkeley where I was accepted as a film studies major. I love film and I am considering pursuing it in graduate school and beyond, most likely with a concentration in documentary work. However, I also love English and would simultaneously love to be a writer. The most obvious course of action would be to double major in Film and English at Berkeley, though this will probably not be an option due to the number of credits I have already accrued coupled with the strict unit caps. There is no minor in Film Studies, and as a result I am considering majoring in English and minoring in Peace and Conflict Studies instead, as I would like to take my filmwork in that direction. I know that your B.A. does not have "match" your chosen graduate path, but which of these two would be more advantageous for someone pursuing a graduate degree in film? A double major in English and Film Studies or a major in English with a minor in Peace and Conflict Studies? Any insight? Thanks!

Remember that as a transfer student, UC’s only take some of your units, even if you did 100 plus transferable units, they’ll only take about 70 of those transferable units to put you at junior standing, so you still have the chance to double major, you just wont have freedom to take electives or any courses outside of your major.

if you’re going to be pursuing a possible ma in film studies, and not production, the English plus whatever your preferred choice is the right direction for you. film studies i think is very similar to english, instead of analyzing discussing film you’ll be doing it with literature. what do you prefer? be sure to look at the electives of all majors. you can’t go wrong with either.

Top director Michael Mann (Public Enemy opening soon) was an ug English major who went to film grad school.
