Hi, my son got a B in his Jr. English class, but a 5 on the AP (it wasn't an AP class, his school doesn't have AP English), and a 740 on the SAT CR section. What will this say to colleges. The reason he got a B was because the teacher was incredably hard and only gave 2 A-s to a class of 21.

It won’t raise very many question marks… B-5, A-4, doesn’t raise much concern. But a A-2, C-5 would.

Its no big deal they will understand that your son’s school class was extremely hard but the 5 on your AP test shows that he is overly qualified and knows the subject.

Ok, thanks a lot.

I got a 5 on the AP Literature exam too, as well as a 760 on the CR. I got nothing but Bs in English my first three years of high school.

Here’s what it will say to colleges: your son was enrolled in a an exceedingly difficult and challenging program. However, he is not among the best students in the class. There certainly are better writers than him.

They simply don’t have the time to parse applications this way. Many kids do better or standardized tests than their class grades would imply and many do the opposite. Only a second or third tier school looking for reasons to accept an applicant might scrutinize to that extent.

^One B is not going to kill any student’s application to a top school…

Happened to me, and I got into Penn. So I second the post above me.
