I think that you already know what you want to do but really Ws don’t look too bad. In your UC comments section you can always explain it anyway especially since it’s your 1st one but I know how important maintaining your GPA is. In case people don’t realize this, a lot of people who graduate college with a 4.0 have a ton of Ws. Sometimes, that’s all you can do and it seems like you’ve already decided that you want to spend an extra year preparing to apply to a variety of schools, so it’s not like you’re being unrealistic about your goals. Take what people on here say into considering but you’re the one that knows your personal situation and your capabilities best.

Part of me thinks doing something like this should be grounds for getting kicked out of college, but seeing as I’ve taken a W over a C before, I can understand (and I’m such a hypocrite XD)

doing something like what? That’s the point of being able to get a W at almost the end of the semester, to drop the class because you couldn’t obtain the grade that you wanted.

I’m currently doing my 2nd year at my CC so I am clearly not “wasting” another year if i decide to stay for one more year because most people who transfer spend about 3-4 years to transfer out. I’m only 20 years old, its not like I’m gonna be here til im 25.

But i really do appreciate all you’re guys feedback. It’s making me really think about what i should do so i really thank you guys for taking the time to look at my situation.

I think “the something like that” refers to wasting the already greatly depleted resources of the CCC system by dropping a class you are getting a B in with the intention of registering for another, hopefully less challenging, science course next semester. And I imagine if you can not get an A in Geology or Meteorology you will drop them too.

Students who accumulate 19 Ws as one poster boasted are a disgrace, should be ashamed of themselves and should have been dismissed from their CCC long ago. The students who constantly take Ws in courses they are passing and others that stay for additional years because they did not get into their first choice four year university and want to try again are two major reasons why the CCC system is so impacted and in danger of failing in its mission.

Students who drop courses near the end of the semester should be given an F for the course unless they have a documented medical condition that would prevent them from completing the course and students that accumulate more than 60 semester units and are accepted at any four year college should not be allowed to continue to enroll in CCC courses.

The CCC system can no longer afford to put up with these abusive practices by some students that reduce opportunities for other students to benefit from the CCC system.

^^Well said.

^^ Sometimes, I feel CollegeConfidential needs a reputation system:
+1 Lemaitre

Other times, I realize, the number of people here like talebi likely outnumber reasonable folks given that the first 3 posters here all advised him to drop.

Put it this way - if you’re borderlining a C I can understand taking the W, I’ve been there and done that.

Taking the W for the sake of prestige is pretty asinine and shows lack of character. Granted, no UC department will ever know this since they never pay attention to Ws. You can have 5, 10, or 35 Ws and it will play no role, although I think if they see a 4.0 GPA they’ll start to ask questions.

As i have said before, there were spots in the beginning of the semester. Walk-ins were welcomed, so don’t say that i’m depleting resources because it is false.

This is my 1st W EVER its not my 5th 17th 32th or 2nd. Its my 1st.

If i want to be competitive i need a higher GPA, theres really no other way to put it.

And physics is not even required to transfer anyways so i don’t see why this is such a negative thing. I would understand if you are a science/math major but I am not, and the only reason why i took physics in the first place because less quantitative science courses were full for obvious reasons.

I still appreciate all your guys’ feedback and time to look at my dilemma.

Thanks again.

I don’t even know why you came here to ask everyone this, it’s obvious that you were going to get the W the anyway, you just wanted people to agree with you.

I needed opinions and respect all of yours but I only have a couple days to withdrawal and I needed someone to argue against me about it.

I took a W in a film class last spring. I was gonna get a B so I decided to drop and take another art class later. I got into Haas with that W no problem.

I was gaurding a 4.0 though. I dont know if such a small difference in GPA in your case will really make that much of a difference. If you want to get into Haas with a 3.7-3.8, make sure to have some good ECs and excellent essays.

Hey CalFTW.

I’m taking 6 classes, and more than likely getting a B in spanish 3 this semester. I have a 4.0 and this is my last semester. Do you think it’s worth it to take the W and take the class at UCLA or just finish it up with the B? I wish I had taken it pass/no pass because I’ve been working 40 hours a week and my teacher is an impossibly hard grader (no one can get 100% participation credit in his class, which is a lot of our grade). I don’t know if I should contact UCLA and ask them if I could be rescinded if I dropped the course. I’m an English major so foreign language is technically a pre-req but I have every other pre-req done!

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for everybody’s feedback

Congrats @CalFTW I hope you take full advantage of everything they offer, for the sake of all the strong candidates who got rejected.

@indie I would say just take the B, you are already in UCLA and those extra units will help out. I dont think Spanish will get any easier at UCLA so you might even end up getting a B later on anyways

@talebi818 Thanks, i wish you all the best, work your ass off and get into Cal!

Lemaitre - you are also 60 years old and you’re still browsing a college forum. For the record, I didn’t “boast” about my Ws. I mentioned them because I want other students to see that they might not be the lost cause that people think they are and that a college will understand that sometimes you need to do what’s best for you. My Ws came from an OOS school I attended before I even moved to CA that i PAYED 80k for so you can chill out about wasting CA’s money. Besides, I have only been in a CCC for 3 years, in which for one year I payed out of state tuition. Back then, my kidney failed mid semester and it took a long time for me to emotionally get back on track with school, not that someone’s personal reasons for taking a W are any of your business. Stop acting like you know it all because you “know someone” in a CC when you have absolutely no idea what it’s like to be a student right NOW.

If you’re going to keep trying to be “malicious”, stop replying to my posts. This isn’t the first time you had something to say in regards to something I’ve mentioned in a post. You’re basically embodying the typical CA conservative on the brink of retirement and not offering any useful information in this thread. If you don’t have anything helpful to say, then stop being critical of other people’s situations. This is where people come for ADVICE, not to be criticized for a choice they might make in hopes of bettering their options in life.

There’s some kind of correlation between high GPAs and poor English on this forum.

shudder I keep seeing stuff like PAYED instead of paid and uh… a dude that claimed to have a 2400 SAT that kept mixing up their/there/they’re. Damn.

Seriously wwlink? I typed that on my phone. Give me a break.

Talebi- Drop the course. You’re going to take another crack at Haas so you’ve got time. Really doesn’t make sense to continue a physics(Why you chose to register for physics is beyond me as well) class as a business student anyway.

@MeStudyStuff

That was the only science course available at my CC that fulfilled Haas’s Breadth Requirements.
