B’s

My daughter is taking an extremely rigorous courseload and will end up graduating with about 12AP plus plus a few Aice and one dual enrollment. She is convinced that if she gets several semester B’s throughout all 4 years that she cannot get into UF. Even with a high gpa and great test scores. Please comment and help me show her that getting a B here and there won’t be the end of the world.

@Jenwyman30 Is she a senior who has already applied? UF looks at your overall GPA, so I don’t think getting Bs on the mid-year report card is an issue at all, regardless of the year. Remember, they are looking at 40,000+ applications. They will see her overall “GPA”-- the “A” stands for average, you can remind her. I think she is over-analyzing. UF does not look at senior year grades during the application process, but they do check the transcript at the end of senior to be sure the kid didn’t take senior year off due to senioritis. Kids who bombed in senior year have had admissions pulled.

No, she is only a sophomore! She’s in full panic mode and thinks she has no chance of going to UF now. She thinks it time to throw in the towel. Lol. I need her to chill, so I was hoping to hear from some people that got in with B’s on their
H. S. transcript.

My son has gotten 10 Bs in 3 years. Has a 3.52UW and a 4.24W. 1510/35 SAT/ACT. His GPA lags others with the same test scores. So far, he has been admitted to Pitt and Penn State. Kids from his OOS HS have gotten in with a 3.78W.

Do you have access to Naviance?

My daughter got several B’s and got into UF. You don’t need an 4.0 uw/4.7 weight GPA.

If she’s taking a rigorous load of classes, a rule of thumb you can use, is 3 A’s to 1 B ratio (a 3.75 unweighted GPA). If she’s doing better than that, her GPA is likely fine and it’s the other (holistic) factors that start coming into play.

The average GPA for the 2022 class was 4.4 If you get a B on one AP class, and an A on another, that averages out to a 4.5 (since AP classes are worth an extra point to your GPA). Keep in mind that AP, AICE, IB, and DE classes are worth +1.0 to your GPA, while honor classes are worth +0.5.

Also, keep in mind that UF WANTS to see that the student took a rigorous course load, like your daughter. They put more value on a student with a rigorous course load and a lower GPA, than one with a higher GPA but much less rigorous course load. The key is to take a rigorous course load, without overloading your daughter. A few B’s are to be expected.

Also, see below on how UF requires grades be entered into the SSAR. UF doesn’t want 9 week grades, they want either the semester grade or the final grade. Many of her B’s may never be considered by UF.

Good Luck!

I think @Gator88NE makes the best case. UF will look at the final grade as part of the larger average. UF knows that kids go through ups and downs. They are more interested in your daughter’s overall body of work vs. a couple Bs (or even Cs) on a semester report card. Frankly, it’s a good lesson to learn now that you have to work hard for what you want academically (and in life, of course.) The good news is that she knows where to prioritize her efforts for the remainder of the year and what she might want to avoid on her schedule next year. My daughter, now at UF, struggled in her sophomore year with AP Environmental Science. She then knew that taking AP Chem or AP Bio later on might not be the best idea. While there are high flyers at every high school that do well in all subjects, most kids start to get a handle on where their strengths and weaknesses are by the end of sophomore year, if not sooner.

The GPA needed may depend on major. For instance, at some well ranked public schools , CS has a higher GPA than other majors, due to demand from out of state. UF Gainesville is gaining in popularity as they offer the Gator Nation scholarship to out of state students, making it affordable. Also UF has solid aerospace, materials science, programs other state flagships may not offer, and top hospitals right on campus, so it attracts premeds and engineers too, from out of state.
Thats not going to calm down OP, unfortunately, but just a perspective to be aware of. UF is gaining in popularity and rank, and getting noticed by many students around the globe.

i had multiple Bs and am a sophomore at UF! Don’t let the Bs keep her down but also make sure she gets involved in other stuff and doesnt spend her 4 years in high school only doing school.
