I'm going to UCSB this fall and my major is geography as of now, however i'm not too sure what my course of action should be if i end up sticking with this major. I know SB has one of the best geography departments, but what can I do with a BA in Geography, and which concentration in geography would be best? Would i have to go grad school to find a job, or would i have employment opportunities after 4 years? Thank you.

If you want to maximize your chances of getting employed in a geography-related field, study GIS (Geographic Information Systems) at UCSB. You could also teach social studies if you earn a teaching certificate.

Geography is a fascinating (and often neglected field of study). Years ago, when I was in high school, I took the AP Human Geography exam (self-study) and really enjoyed the course content. If you combine the softer social science aspects of the major with the hard technical skills of GIS, you should be able to set yourself up with great employment opportunities. Many public and private enterprises use geospatial technology.

Thanks, so would i need to go to grad school at all or would i be able to find a job after simply getting a BA in geography GIS concentration in 4 years? what is the starting salary and what income ranges are there? thanks
