I'm waiting on a few more letters, but right now acceptance into a BFA is questionable. My question is, what do I do now? I've thought about doing a BA at one of my schools and trying to transfer into their program, but how likely is this? Has anyone done it successfully? Are certain schools more open, or are there some that still allow you to graduate in four years, allowing you to join the class as a sophomore?

My daughter is in the same boat so I can’t speak from past success but from what some schools have told us. Some schools are very open to this, but likely not the “top tier” programs (although we haven’t spoken with a lot of those).

In our case both Kent State and Northern Kentucky have said starting as a BA and reauditioning is a viable option. KSU spent some time talking about this at the parent meeting we attended. They also said they try to work out the classes so that graduation in 4 years is still possible. With NKU you are taking basically the same core classes between BA and BFA (at least first year) so completion in 4 years is still very doable. I get the impression they actually prefer folks to start as a BA and then audition, although they do take some people straight into the BFA program. But their BA program appears to be very flexible even if you don’t wind up in the BFA program. We are going down there in a couple weeks to review in more detail so my D can make her final decision.

I have heard that Ball State is wonderful and accept kids into the BA that didn’t get into the BFA the first time around. They even work with you so you can re-audition and give you tons of support in order to help you on the next go around to get into the BFA. See if you can still apply for this year and even if the website says it’s too late, call the school and see if they’ll let you apply. They were also very generous with my D’s academic scholarship. I understand that the people there are wonderful. See what you can do to get in. Also, Columbia College of Chicago is a wonderful alternative. Everyone starts in the BA and the serious students move into the BFA program. See if you can still apply there and don’t give up if the website says it’s past the deadline to apply. Call the school and tell them you just heard about them and how wonderful they are and see if they’ll take your application (if, in fact, the deadline has passed - it may not have passed). Plenty of schools take applications late into the spring.
