How hard is it to get into a six year program. And how many schools have them. Do you have to be ranked first in your class or can you be 30 or 40. And do you need straight A's

bump..........

There are two programs that offer 6-year options for both in-state and out-of-state students: UMKC and Penn State.

Many people apply to both programs (probably around 600+ each). The pool is considerably less than some prestigious 7-year programs like Northwestern HPME or 8-year programs like Brown PMLE, since not many students are bent on finishing in 6 years.

In terms of requirements, you don't need to be an all-star with a 2400 SAT, 4.0 GPA, and pages full of extracurriculars.

I'm currently in the Penn State program, and our freshman class had around a 1500+ SAT average (2250+ for the new SAT), around 3.7-3.8 UW GPA, and a few prominent extracurriculars. Keep in mind, however, that having a low GPA doesn't bar you from entering the program, especially if you have good SAT scores and extracurriculars to balance them. In fact, once you receive the interview, test scores and GPA are ignored completely, and the interviewers simply gauge you on your willingness to become a doctor.
