Hi everyone!
I just recently paid my tuition deposit, and I could not be more excited to be attending UVA in the fall! I was absolutely blown away by the kindness and incredibly welcoming nature of everyone at UVA during DOTL, and I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to attend such an incredible school.
I decided to make an account to ask this question in hopes of gathering some responses from students or alumni given that I am OOS and I don’t know anyone at UVA to ask, so I would appreciate any feedback!!
I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences as a Computer Science major, and I am currently listed as undecided given that I must apply into the major. Recently, however, I have been thinking of switching to SEAS for Computer Science.
Based on the what I have been able to gather from my research, it appears that the main difference between the two degrees is that the BA is more theory and the BS is more hands-on and the actual application of programming.
Is this true?
I very much enjoy the application of programming and the actual hands-on side of it which is why I have been thinking of switching to SEAS, but I have a few concerns.
The BS in Computer Science from SEAS requires Chemistry and Physics, and the BA does not. I took Honors Chemistry and Honors Physics in High School and received As in both (they were quite rigorous for Honors courses, and they used college level programs for homework- OWLs and Mastering Physics). However, I am sure that everyone at SEAS took AP Chemistry and AP Physics in high school and is overwhelmingly accomplished in these areas, and I am worried that I would be behind everyone because I didn’t take AP and that I would begin to flounder in the classes, and I do not want my GPA to suffer greatly as a result.
I have also read that the E-school is incredibly difficult and time consuming, and I would really like to join a Sorority and a few clubs, and possibly even an intramural sport (sailing). I am no stranger to hard work and I worked incredibly hard in high school, but I am worried that the E-School would be so time consuming in that it would prevent me from joining the extra-curricular activities that I am interested in.
Also, would the BA vs the BS have any effect on my job opportunities? Say, if I possibly wanted to look into doing something with robotics for graduate school, could I still do that with the BA?
I want to be as educated as possible on this issue before I make a decision, so I really appreciate your comments in regard to this topic. I wish you all the very best. Go hoos!!!
