Babson College vs TAMU Mays Undegrad?

Hello everyone,

I am a senior who has recently been accepted to TAMU Mays undergrad pre-business and Babson College (everyone is business management, but looking to concentrate in entrepreneurship or retail management). I am torn in choosing a school because TAMU offers instate tuition for me, is close to home, and offers a very good network. However, I am skeptical because I go to a small school and have heard Mays will have very large class sizes the first two years. I prefer the class size of Babson and financially the expenses are affordable for my family but will be a mid 50% student there based on my high school stats and concerned about the rigor of course-load and grade deflation policies there.

Would anyone who knows about both schools be able to provide comparisons for the schools? How does Babson fair in the job world compared to Mays? I understand it is ranked higher by US News but wonder if it would be a career swing to go from one to the other or if it is likely they would lead to similar career opportunities?

You should ask the career centers at both campuses about internship and job placement. They are the experts.

The two schools represent are very very different environments. Where do you think you will thrive?

I definitely liked the environment of Babson more, however I also really liked the people I met at A&M and the campus.

If you’re in-state, you really can’t go wrong with Mays. Texas has one of the strongest economies on the nation. Most employers recruit locally or regionally, which gives A&M a big advantage with job prospects as a state flagship school.

How committed are you to business, and what are your post-graduation hopes (true, these are not possible to know entirely)? A&M will have clout in TX (as @coolguy40 notes), even with A&M’s truly ginormous size. Yes, OP, A&M is huge, and you’ll have to deal with this, although students seem to be happy at A&M.

In the abstract, though, it’s hard to argue against Babson. Business is by far the most popular major: 20-24% of all college students major in business. However, those students fortunate enough to go to a terrific program (Wharton, Sloan, Kellogg, Stern, Kelley, Ross) usually find high starting salaries plus high signing bonuses.

I don’t really care much about rankings, but US News has A&M higher than Babson, but I like that Babson’s focus is entirely dedicated to business. You can’t go wrong either way. Since both are affordable for your family, why not attend the place where you’ll thrive and be most happy?
