I've been lurking on these forums for a number of months, and, following a series of disappointing college admissions decisions, have decided to post here, to seek help with the decision making process. As the title implies, I am down to Babson, Northeastern, University of Michigan, and UVA. For reference, I would like to study business.

Babson: I got a half tuition scholarship there, and am seeking to get a full tuition scholarship there as well.

Northeastern: 16k a year scholarship

Michigan: $0 in scholarship money; would have to pay full price

UVA: $ in scholarship money; would have to pay full price

My goals for my college years and beyond are to work in the financial industry either in New York, London, or Germany. I guess the dilemma here comes down to how much I'm willing to pay for college. My parents are planning on spending 20k a year, so I would have to make up the difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As per your stated goals, Umich most definitely. You’d be able to benefit from Umich’s alumni quite a bit. ALthough UPenn would be better if you are talking London/Europe-I’m based in London and am surrounded by Europeans. Hell if you’re talking eastcoast and europe, something like LSE would be so much better than all of these. I don;t recommend babson or northeastern with your career plans. You would need to go to more recognised unis I’m afraid in order to land better opportunities in the short run. NYU I understand is a bit hefty so i guess that’s why you’re not considering it. The competition you face will be quite fierce, such as the likes of Jan Sramek (google him) and basically just a bunch of London, Hongkong and Ivy (+ at least unis such as Umich and NYU) graduates.

Look at the bottom line cost of each school, not the “scholarship” money. UVA and Michigan at full price are possibly less expensive than the private schools that are giving you reduced tuition. Also consider the size of the alumni network at each school and the reputation of the business schools specifically (ahem, McIntire). I think that will lead you to one of the two public schools.

UVA and Michigan would not be cheaper…They are $40k, $44k respectively. Northeasterm would be $32k with scholarship, Babson the same with 1/2 tuition.

Tough choices, Babson and NU both strong business programs. If your parents will pay $20k, that means you would need loans of $80-100k for UVA and Michigan…and about half that for the other 2.

Ouch! Getting into $100,000 of debt for any university, including the Harvards of the World, simply isn’t worth it. Unfortunately, getting into $40,000 debt to attend schools such as NEU and Babson isn’t worth it either. Do you have any in-state options?

CC posters sure know how to make someone feel good!

half tuition at babson is $18,000… so your parents can cover it! but you have to figure out housing, which is another $8,000 a year. either way, for the value of the school and long-term return on investment, babson is definitely your best bet.

I agree ishamig. But even with the Babson scholarship, the OP will still have to get into roughly $30,000-$40,000 debt.
