Backup Schools for Stanford Hopefuls

Out of curiosity, where did you Stanford hopefuls apply as safety and match schools? Given that we all want to attend Stanford as our top choice (or not?) since it is so great, where else would you be happy attending?

So, let's get this list going. Let's see if we have a trend.

/Name/Matches/Safeties

Themust/Duke, Rice, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, UC Berkeley/U of Michigan at Ann Arbor

Applying next year.

Will be.

Stanford
Princeton
University of Florida
University of Central Florida
University of South Florida

well UCLA and Berkeley for me
not exactly “safety” just that’s where I’ll probably go if I don’t get into stanford

ok
Reaches: HYP - Stanford top choice OF COURSE!
lower reaches: Columbia, UChicago
high/low match: UCLA
for sure: UofMichigan, Michigan State

I was accepted EA, but my safety was University of Texas at Austin.

I withdrew most of my applications, but my list looked like this:

REACHES
Stanford
Yale

MATCHES
Rice
University of Chicago
WUStL

SAFETIES
George Washington
Boston University
University of Pittsburgh

I had a lot of “safeties” because in case of catastrophe, I needed an extremely good financial aid package.

REACHES
Harvard
Princeton
Stanford
MIT

MATCHES
University of Chicago (already accepted!)
Cornell
Northwestern

SAFETIES

Already accepted:
WUStL
Duke (likely)
UC Berkeley (Chancellor’s invitation)

Waiting for Stanford, cause I live so close!

Backup (aka already accepted into)

UCSB
UCLA
UC Berkeley (engineering/ potential regents)
CalTech

I would probably happily go to Stanford over Caltech. My only possible ticket out of CA is the big three Ivy Leagues out on the East coast :/

Georgetown, UChicago, and Dartmouth are functioning as my safeties since I’ve already been accepted at them.

Reaches:
Stanford
UChicago

Match:
UVA (received likely)

Safety:
GMU (accepted)

didn’t apply to a lot of places (even though it felt like a substantial amount when I was doing apps).

Love: Stanford

Safeties: Drexel, Penn State

I made a little flow chart of super-reaches to safeties, with interest put on my likeliness to attend, if I am admitted to all:

Stanford, Yale —> Brown U —> U of C, Pomona College —> UC Berkeley —> UCLA, UCSD —> UC Davis.

So far I’ve been accepted to UCLA, UCSD, and UC Davis. I feel quite conifident about UC Berkeley. And I was waitlisted at UofC two days ago, which makes me think that I pretty much need to sever the flow chart at UofC. However, I feel fairly confident that the waitlisting was due to my essays, as I did not demonstrate as much interest as I could have. I’m hoping that that was the case, not because of my EC’s or stats. My Stanford application was by far the best, as I worked to develop a personality through it, and I think I largely succeeded.

If anything, I’m really counting on Pomona College, because I don’t want to end up at a UC…

Reaches: Stanford, Harvard, Yale, UPenn/LSM, Brown, Columbia
Matches: Cornell (likely), WUSTL (accepted w/ Honorary Scholars Finalist), UChicago (Waitlist), Northwestern, Johns Hopkins
Safeties: UMich (accepted), NYU (accepted), Case Western (accepted)
