I finished my 1st semester in college with a 2.4 GPA, and I'm majoring in Biology. I was wondering if it would be possible to even get that GPA up over a 3.5? If not am I screwed? I'm trying to go into med-school. I know with a low GPA that I probably won't get accepted, and I'm worried about this. Any advice?

Just concentrate on getting it above a 3.0, you have plenty of time to get it back up, and can even do a post-bacc to help that if needed. Right now if you have a 3.3 with a good MCAT you can get into a lot of DO schools. MD schools usually want a 3.5+, but that’s attainable if you work hard.

Check out the Student Doctor Network forums and ask your question in the Pre-med forum there. They can help you out a lot.
Thank you! I will go ask them right now.

You can definitely get your GPA above a 3.5 if you work hard. I was worse off than you after my 1st semester and had a 1.7 GPA and was put on academic probation. However, I got it together and currently have a 3.3 GPA coming into my junior year and hope to continue to raise above a 3.5 before I graduate. Study and work hard and good things will come!

You can certainly bring it back up. Plenty of students don’t do very well their first semester, because they’re trying to adjust to the college lifestyle, and the way college courses work. As long as you refocus your efforts, you can bring it back up well over a 3.0.
