Bad College Essay Topic?

For the common app, is it to 'edgy' to write about having gay parents? I feel that it's a central part of my life, but I don't want to risk offending anyone. The essay would be more about the kind of person it made me, not so much advocating for gay rights or anything.
thoughts?

A topic like this is extremely unique and I haven’t ever heard it being done before. As long as it’s focused on you and not about gay rights or something, I don’t see any reason why you can’t.

Do you want to go to a college where people would be put off–or worse, “offended”–by the fact that you have gay parents?

If that’s an experience that helped shape you into the person you’ve become so far, write about it. I’d go farther, and say that if that experience made you into an ardent advocate for gay rights, go ahead and write about that. If that bothers the admissions office, then that’s probably a college where you wouldn’t have been a happy camper anyway.

FWIW, I think most college admissions offices won’t have a problem with the topic. I mean, if you write a bad essay on the topic, that’s still a problem, but the problem would be with the execution and not with the topic. If you see what I mean.

I like it, it’s unique. Go for it-

I think your experience would fit Common App Essay Prompt #1, especially if you grew up in an area where there were few children of gay parents.

If you like, PM it to me and I will give you some honest feedback. I’m a mom who likes to write.

That is certainly a very appropriate topic for your life and no one will be offended. You can feel free not to censor yourself.
