Bad First Semester of College

I'm planning on applying as a sophomore transfer for fall 09 to BC and NYU.
I just finished my first semester at my community college. unfortunately I got a C in calc. I know they obviously would look down on this if I was a business major, but what if I'm an Anthro major? I used to be an econ major but changed because I realized that I cannot stand one more bit of calculus. It's not for me.
So my question is, if I get an average GPA, like 3.4 for this first semester, and then a really high GPA next semester (3.8 to 4.0 range) would I have a chance of getting accepted?
Or would it be wise to wait to apply for junior year so they can see a longer progression of getting better grades?

I know colleges look at high school career for sophomore transfers. My high school GPA was 3.9 W, took a lot of APs, AP scholar with honor, lots of awards like honor roll, 1950 SAT, 28 ACT, great extracurriculars.
My extracurriculars in college are work, internship with merrill lynch, and commissioner to director of budget management in associated students.

I look forward to anyone's advice!

wait to apply for your junior year

a 3.4 from a cc is going to be very far from competitive for nyu or bc. the c grade will most certainly matter, the prospective colleges cant just look at the one or two anthro classes you took at your current school as indicators of future performance because you will be taking classes outside of your major there as well...if you are really serious about getting in, forget the 3.8, get a 4.0 the next two semesters to try and make up for the weak first semester...

best of luck
