Bad freshman year, Can I still make it?

My 9th grade year just finished up and i ended with a 3.3-3.4 unweighted. My classes this year are harder than the classes I will have next year. I am retaking a few classes ( need on opinion on this), but next year i hope to bump my GPA to high 3.7 or low 3.8. I took a practice SAT and did very well. Also I am on varsity tennis, robotics club, student action senate, JV golf, volunteer at red cross, also captain of chess club. My school is top 10 in the state. I know I can get straight A’s next year, this year I was dealing with anxiety and was immature. Do I still have a chance? Thanks!

No, you shouldn’t retake high school classes unless you actually failed them. Waste of your valuable learning time.

I’ve never even heard of a high school allowing you to retake classes…is that common?

Not really, just wanted to do it to increase GPA. @iwannabe_Brown

That won’t be a strong position to come from repeating classes instead of moving on to the next level. Or taking easier classes as you advance in grade. But yes you can overcome a slow start to high school. Also taking the practice SAT isn’t maybe the best use of time. The SAT is changing to be more ACT like in spring of 2016. Studying is better than taking practice SAT right now. Use spare time reading the HS classic literature. Do fun and interesting stuff.

@indianguy1 to be competitive for Brown, it helps to take the most rigorous classes your high school offers and finish in the top 10% of your class. In addition to being academically competitive, you’ll also want to have a compelling application.

Here is the common data set and some Brown admissions facts:

Best of Luck!

Graduated from Brown not too long ago. My advice? Focus on learning and doing what you enjoy. Aim for great grades, but not just because you want to go to Brown. Participate in interesting things, but only if they’re meaningful to you.

You’re only starting sophomore year — there’s a lot of time to go. Relax and do the best you can out of personal motivation rather than in hopes of raising poorly defined chances at any given college.

Me and you are very alike, screwed up this year being immature but earned a 3.3 GPA at first to the end of a year with improved 3.7 cumulative out of 5.0. I did a post just like this and I was told, colleges like to see improvements and GPA isn’t everything in the app.

Goodluck, I believe you can do it as I have the same hope that I can do it too.

Thanks, I’m sure we will make it!! @andrewl2k
