Hi all,
So as a junior in high school I've been thinking about ROTC for awhile now, namely AFROTC. and I read they tend to accept people more if they are going to be majoring in something like engineering. so my question is this:
would it be a bad idea to major in, say aerospace engineering with little to no prior experience with it? would I be way in over my head?

As a high school student you will have no academic experience in any engineering field. But be advised that starting in 2011 all ROTC programs will start giving scholarship priority to technical majors. And the AF or any other branch doesn’t discriminate between aerospace or any other engineering degree. (Nuclear engineering being the exception).

The ONE degree you have to have to enter a military specialty is a medical associated degree. E.G., nursing, MD, med tech, etc.

well my school does offer some engineering class, although I don’t know if they’re very good and at this point I have no room in my schedule to take them

but just to clear things up, you said priority to technical majors - what would be classified as a technical major?

The military generally considers technical majors as any of the calculus based Bachelor of Science degrees such as math or physics or engineering. A minimum GPA is desired of > 2.5, but like anything competitive, higher is better - you will meet many engineering majors in the USAF with 3.5+.

A lot of skilled engineers work in the military. It seems the thought process learned in engineering school works well in the military. Aerospace engineering will give you an option to do cool work with the military. And the fact that you don’t have experience is ok, nobody does.

If toblin is correct, stick to one of the Tier 1 majors - Aero Engr being one of them.

And don’t worry about not taking any engr classes in HS. Just take all of the math, physics, and chemistry you can. My D has been accepted into the USNA and the Aero Engr Honors program at Bama with no engr classes in HS.
