Bad News for Community College Students

It's about to get a whole lot worse:

California community colleges: California community colleges to slash enrollment, classes - latimes.com

I’m glad I’m transferring this year, but man…this sucks for the rest :(

Maybe people will have to start applying/competing for community college? I predict a rise in for-profit colleges.

i agree that this is awful, but maybe people will start valuing their education more. i can’t tell you how many people I know who have been there for 3 or 4 years and haven’t even tried to figure out what igetc is. and a lot of people who just continuously fail classes and don’t seem to even care.

my favorite was a few days ago when my friend was really truly mad that our professor gave us more than one short answer (which was given to us in the study guide so it wasn’t even a surprise)

people at my cc take their education for granted, maybe this will weed them out or inspire them to try harder.

again, this is TERRIBLE for the people who actually want to be in school. i totally do not support this at all, but it’s just something i thought about.

I think all the CC transfers this year dodged a bullet. But I’m sorry to hear that.

^^ seriously. Between this and tag gpa increases? Yeah.

^^ First of all TAG is complete BS, all us seniors have to compete for a spot why shouldn’t you?

@meteman Just because some people choose a smarter (more reliable) way of getting accepted doesn’t mean they deserve to be at a UC any less than you.

@meteman there are spots reserved for transfers at UC. Transfers aren’t taking away what’s already in place for freshmen.

The spots that are reserved for transfers at UCs ARE spots taken away from freshmen (the more deserving applicants)

Why would the freshman be more deserving? I doubt you have ANY idea what certain students go through which forces them to go to a CC. Also, getting in right out of high school doesn’t make you anymore intelligent.

Anyway, to the OP, this really does suck.

@mete

More deserving? Thats a bold statement

I too fail to see how freshman transfers are more deserving…most of the CC students I know that are trying to transfer couldn’t afford to transfer right out of high school, had some extreme circumstance like medical illness or immigrating to the US recently, and/or are working full-time while going to school full-time. That could just be unique to the students that I know but I feel like most of us transfers are working are buns off for this and are therefore equally deserving.

As to the topic of the thread, this will probably affect my decision as to whether or not I should transfer to a less than number one choice or wait it out one more year at a CC. I already feel that CC’s are too crowded as is, I can’t imagine how they would be with even more cut classes.

meteman = ■■■■■, don’t feed him

^Very very true

^ not only is he a ■■■■■ but a totally stupid one. so apparently its the transfer students fault that its harder to get into UC’s and the budget crisis has nothing to do with it.

UCSDForMe, I think you captured my thoughts exactly. This will definitely factor into the decision process for many of the transfer students this year, myself included.

18 and ****ed off at the world. I guess teenage angst looks to blame anyone it can when delusions of grandeur slaps them in the face.

Most of the people at CC don’t even seem to be serious about education. People complain about not getting into classes when they register for them 1 week before a semester begins. Half of the people drop the classes in the end. I say it’s time to weed out the morons who are just there to socialize and/or waste the valuable time of serious students.

@christian612

exactly. there are so many people just wasting time at my CC, it ****es me off that half the people that go to my college are wasting taxpayer money by having 2.0 GPAs and no educational goals whatsoever, and in effect taking away classes, services, and financial aid from people who actually have set goals and standards for themselves.

in my opinion the whole CC system should be revamped and dedicated entirely to four-year transfers. the need for people who have BA’s greatly exceeds the need for people with AAs, which is pretty much nil.
