bad professor?

so, I'm a freshman at a really small, private liberal arts school that is well known for its good professors. they're supposed to be very approachable.

well, today i had a question to ask to my chemistry prof. I was going to ask after lecture, but he ran off, saying he didnt have time. later in the afternoon, i went to his office 15 minutes before our lab was to begin. i attempted to ask my question but he was quick (he didnt even let me ask the question) to inform me that i need to come back during his office hours and that he didnt have time to help me any other time. his office hours had ended 15 minutes before i got there.

i would have gone during office hours, but i have other classes during that time.

it just kinda ****ed me off. he seems like he thinks he is better than all of us... and that we're a waste of time.

Maybe you could email him the question so that he could answer it when he has time? Or better yet, set up a time via email that would be convenient for him to meet with you?

Most professors will list their office hours and specify "and by appointment". Make one! Email him, tell him your availability and ask him which time would be most convenient.

If he continues to be difficult and you aren't able to speak to him outside of class at all, talk to the department head and say that you feel so-and-so isn't ever available. The DH should be able to pull strings for you.

as the others have said, if you have a class during office hours, then you can make an appointment by email with the professor, where they will (or at least should) be happy to answer your question.

he is better than all of you. That's why he's the one teaching the class.

Well, he's certainly not better than you, but he's probably busier than you. This is a typical professor. You have to go during office hours, otherwise he'll brush you off.

why not ask your classmates what their experience has been?
