Did anyone read Time Magazine's article on college suicide? The article was nothing but fuel added to the red hot flame of Cornell's notorious high suicide rate.

Yes, I wasn't too happy to see Cornell mentioned in the first paragraph, but I think the article gave the impression that all colleges are in a bind when it comes to psychologically fragile students. GW University came out more negatively, I thought.

I think Cornell came out badly. Being mentioned in the first sentence ... Having a HUGE picture of one of its students ...

But yah GW got pretty bad publicity too. what happened to getting good publicity?

heh, what with Cornell suicides and deaths, Duke lacrosse scandal, Harvard plagiarism controversy...ivies are getting flak

...Cornell has a low suicide rate btw...

and Duke isn't an Ivy...lol

But ya that poor girl at Harvard (if she is telling the truth about not meaning to take other books info that is)...well...either way it is just really sucky

omg... Cornell got blasted

i just read it and cornell is mentioned throughout the article, every paragraph, what is that saying to the reader? i hate that journalist take a story and run with it. i guess we are in an era of truthiness

ugh what an article...and wow GW did get the worst side of it

Hey Cornell does have a low suicide rate, so for all we know they could be doing the right thing? I'd say its 50-50

Figgy,

I think you're on to something...Cornell has a state of the art prevention program...see here:

Wharf

Wow definitely a paper that knows its stuff...

"heh, what with Cornell suicides and deaths, Duke lacrosse scandal, Harvard plagiarism controversy...ivies are getting flak"

Just heard on FOX news that a guy named Joe Ing is missing from Columbia and a body was found in the east river (they're trying to ID it) Just another thing to add to the whole ivy league + duke thing ...

here is the article

well, this place is a pressure cooker for those that want to do very well...if ur one of those easy-going type, u will be fine

but for those, that worked, literally worked sooo hard in h.s., they could be in for some shock, when they get here, b/c doin that work may only get them a B....

btw, for those pre-fresh, i got a 3.6 my first semesgter, and this semester, i am doing A LOT better, and i am on path for above a 3.9+, so hard work def pays off, just don't be intimidated, and u'll do fine

For what its worth, I believe the two writers credited with producing the story are graduates of Princeton and Columbia respectively.

(at the risk of troll feeding)

Do you have any relialbe sources for these assertions?

Duke pwns Cornell in all fields, especially math

Cornell is ACTUALLY below the college average in suicides

[quote]
Cornell University is one peer institution that does maintain moderately complete records of their student deaths in response to a common perception that they have a high suicide rate. Cornell had eight students take their own lives in the past ten years. With about 19,000 students on campus, Cornell has a suicide rate of about 4.3 per 100,000 student years for that time period, far below both MIT and national rates.

u must be a hopelesshobo, that info is myth

lol, i couldnt really expect civilized responses in a Cornell forum.

but does the truth really hurt THAT much????

A real class act...

I'm sure your peers on the Duke board must be real proud to have you representing Duke. haha
