<p>Colleges are in a no-win situation since the Elizabeth Shin case. That is why, in my opinion anyway, the application to MIT has thinly veiled questions to teachers/counselors to address the applicant's ability to handle adversity. A college either has to weed out at application time those who might have a propensity to have breakdowns or they have to admit a wide range of capable kids and try to handle any emotional problems that arise during school (through counseling, time off, etc.).</p>
