Hey guys.
Hear my rant. Thank you if you are.

I have a pretty strict, demanding, obnoxious stepfather who thinks he controls my entire life (sometimes.. He's okay most of the time.. But this issue means a lot to me). Okay, sounds pretty confusing, let me tell you a couple of examples. Today he told me if I move anywhere in a city, he won't help me. If I go to anywhere except this certain state school, he won't help me. Basically he thinks if I do anything he didn't like to do, I can't do it either. Last weekend, I went to a leadership camp. And he was completely against it because he thought "leadership won't get you anywhere in life". NHS. He was against it the whole way. He thinks its a waste of time and now he gives me more chores because I said NHS was worth my time. He doesn't allow me to join any clubs, because he thinks that clubs are useless crap.

Get the point? Tonight, I was discussing my future plans (JHU, major in biomedical (oh did I say? He told me I shouldn't major in the medical field because it's expensive and apparently I don't have the 'dedication'), live in NYC. And I got this lecture.

What should I do? What scholarship should I apply? I need so much help.

Thanks for reading this.

Study your butt off, get a full ride, and leave your stepdad forever. Seriously, if you’re at the top of your class with a good SAT score and 4 years of dedication to something, you should get a full ride to Berkeley or USC (only schools I know that give full rides to amazing students). Apply to Gates Millennium Scholarship or look up scholarships at fastweb.com

But um, sorry if this question is offensive, where is your mom in this? If she’s around, you should tell her to support you.

Lol, one time I forgot to drain the tub after taking a bath and my stepdad banned me from taking baths.

Seriously.

I feel your pain.

My mom can’t afford it. Also after this I don’t want anyone to support me. Like you said, I want to leave basically forever.

@Leah: That SUCKS! Once I went on a date and I didn’t answer my phone (duh, common courtesy?) and he would let me wash my clothes for the rest of the year (well at least it was nov). So I literally gave all of my clothes to my friend to wash and paid them like 5 bucks.

Robot, I’m adorable obvs.

Lawlz I know baths are childish but they help me relax.

Kimmy, I plan to get a full ride to college so I never have to rely on my parents again. I know I can get them at Pitt, Northeastern, and Bama. Hopefully Vandy or Duke will give me one…but that’s more of a dream…

Support you as in stand up to your stepdad, unless she thinks he’s right or can’t go against him :(

Like to be honest, I know for a fact I can go into a state school full ride. But my state doesn’t have the best biomed program. So now I’m deciding on UCs (san diego or berkeley)

LAWL. I just go over the weekends and get my clothes clean.

A UC is going to cost you 55k a year and rising, and they suck… Such a bad choice.

Got any other cheap good schools?
Biomed kiddo here! :D

Do your parents make enough to qualify for FA? How much do you think they will pay?

they will not pay for anything but state.

so zero.

And they are middle class.

No OOS publics will work then. None.

University of Alabama would give you a full ride of you make national merit, other than that look at midwestern LACs where you are above the average GPA.

OH. Pitt would be perfect for you. You could probably get a full ride or close to it, they have an amazing medical center with a strong bio program, etc.

Also, if your parents will pay like 30k, Minnesota at Twin Cities and Cal Poly SLO are good options. What’s your state school?

I’m guessing Pitt is University of Pittsburg?

Also, leah, just wondering if you knew, how is university of arizona’s biomed program?

Yeah it is. I have a friend who’s going there next year on a full ride. She turned down Cornell for it.

I don’t know too much about UA, but I do know they have really strong research so I would assume the bio program is strong as well.

To expand on what Leah said, you could try googling what other colleges give out full rides to national merit scholars (if you apply). There’s actually a lot of them (schools).

Thanks guys.

I think my new problem is raising my PSAT by 15 points. And BAM. Full ride (:

Thank you all for the advice, tips, and recommendations (especially leah. thanks for recommending pitt! definitely considering that school)

No problem :)

Slave over that PSAT. It’s so important (which is stupid).

I did, and I got my sophomore score (197) up to a 222 and BOOM FULL RIDES.

It’s awesome.

Lucky! Sophomore I got a 173. Now I’m around 200 mark.

Just keep working. It’s really not that hard of a test. Just tell yourself you can do it and get through as many prep books as possible.
